I'm trying to decide between Ridge Racer Revolution and R4. I already own the original Ridge Racer, so I probably won't play the bonus disc of R4. Also, I'm more into arcade type racers as opposed to sims.
Which of these two games would you recommend over the other?

RRR is ok, but ultimately way too shallow to be a worthwhile purchase. Ridge Racer Type 4 has a great soundtrack tonnes of cars and quite a bit of depth to it. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it and I was never a fan of Ridge Racer games until that one came along. Rage Racer gets a lot of positive mentions but I feel that RRT4 builds on the concepts introduced and does a better job with them. The more advanced single player experience for example. It involves a full storyline where you get different branches of dialogues depending on how you do in a race.

I loved the ridge racers on the PS1. I got them all and played them back to front.
RRR as Niode said is really just more of the same as the first game, except you get an angel and devil car.
Type 4, is very similar gameplay, arcade and nothing more. But its a much bigger game and tougher IMO. A much wider variety of cars.
Type 4 is the one to go for if its your first foray into the games though and leave the older ones. If your serious get them all.

I've never played R4 but I didn't care too much for Ridge Racer Revolution. It seemed way too much like a rehash of the original instead of it being an actual sequel. So I'd personally go with R4
Are you aware of a game called Rage Racer (aka Ridge Racer 3)? Because like a lot of other gamers, I strongly prefer that one over the first two Ridge Racer games.

My local Gamestop has Ridge Racer 6 for $5.99 used. I thought about getting that one as well, but wanted to play some of the PS1 titles first.silverback wrote:Type 4 is the one to go for if its your first foray into the games though and leave the older ones. If your serious get them all.

Ridge Racer 6 is great too. The best one in the series IMO. I don't think there's enough changed in 7 for it to be worthwhile, considering it's much higher price tag (thanks to the PS3 tax).
If you have a PSP you should check out Ridge Racers 1 & 2. Really nice little portable games, looks great too (for a portable).

Out of RR6 and Type 4, which would you recommend for someone who is somewhat of a Ridge Racer newbie? I've only played the original RR, and really only a handful of racing games in my life.Niode wrote:Ridge Racer 6 is great too. The best one in the series IMO. To be honest they're pretty much the same, I think R4 was the first one to put an emphasis on grip cars (ones that have high speeds but can't drift) but I think they've pretty much abandoned the idea in RRV onwards (does anyone else wish they'd stick with a constant naming convention?) but that's it as far as driving style is concerned. There's a bit of a learning curve into how to get the cars to drift effectively but that's it. So once you've played one you've played them all really, the only thing that changes is the cars and the tracks. Ridge Racers 1 & 2, Ridge Racer 6 and Ridge Racer 7 have a boost meter so that's another consideration but it's nothing major.Flak Beard wrote:Out of RR6 and Type 4, which would you recommend for someone who is somewhat of a Ridge Racer newbie? If you don't know how to drift on RR then all you do is turn into the corner, aiming for the apex (the centre of the corner, if you are looking at it from directly above) let go of the gas and then re-apply. The timing is a bit finicky at times and some people prefer to use the brake instead of letting go of the gas (since it doesn't require as much accuracy) but you will slow down much more if you use the brake method.

It has a lot of style, fantastic music, great graphics, allows you to use the either the Namco neGcon or JogCon in addition to the regular Dual Shock for much more precise control and as a whole delivers a much cooler experience than any of the other games in the series.
Plus it comes with a bonus disc featuring the original Ridge Racer running at 60fps with higher resolution textures and more advanced shading techniques.
