Late to the Party: a thread for people of sooo last year

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Heh heh heh. I've always been about five or more years behind. I didn't get my NES until 1992, but have remained really into it ever since. Actually, at my school, the NES experienced a brief resurgence in popularity around 1994-1995, so I was actually somewhat popular for a little bit and enjoyed discussing things like Star Tropics with fellow classmates. I also impressed my friends with my small collection of strategy guides and old video game magazines from the late 80's-early 90's.

I'm currently having a lot of fun with my GBA and gamecube. However, I don't really bother anyone by talking about the games I'm playing except for my brothers, who have always been into older games and newer games, and my wife, who isn't a gamer at all.
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii

Fallout 3? I'm only about to start Fallout 1, once I finish a few stragglers. Wasteland was pretty awesome for an 80s RPG. Easily stands up to FF1, which was roughly contemporaneous.

I really started getting into retro gaming when I started undergrad, ten *whew* years ago. Besides tuition, I was on my own, and couldn't afford brand new games. Now that I can afford new games, I seldom do. This month so far, I've purchased $400usd+ of retro games/consoles, and less than $30 in new games. This site doesn't help my checking balance either.

I'm late to the party on HALO 2. Like the first installment, I don't get the following it has. Same 4-6 enemies, a few new guns, same gameplay, similar environments. Nothing spectacular. The argument I always get is, "But the multiplayer is where it's at!", to which I respond, "There are plenty of better multiplayers out there. Ever hear of Counter Strike?".
I'll still finish out the campaign though.

That XKCD comic was awhile back as well, do you read webcomics late too?

On topic though, I haven't even played anything from the orange box yet, still waiting for a good deal. There's something about everybody playing the game first and it getting hyped up before I play it. A good thing about it is I'll know which games to avoid haha.

Yeah, I'm actually doing pretty good if I've only 4 years behind :)
There are some random things that I'll pick up like Street Fighter IV or something like that -- usually only retro-styled or casual stuff.
But otherwise, yeah -- I'm far from cutting edge :)

No game purchases over $9.99. That's my creed and I stick to it most of the time.

Wanted Lego Batman - Gamecrazy $9.99 new. Wanted Rainbow Six - Vegas $12.99, I'll skimp on that. Bioshock and Burnout Paradise both for $25.

I never have played any of them yet but there there ....

Yeah, my way's always been to never pay more than $20 for a game, and never more than $50 for a system, and I've only broken each rule maybe once or twice.

Yes, that's my problem too. I just got Gears of War 1 and MGS3 last year, and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney this year. I only have one 360 game that came out last year, and that's Gears 2. I don't have a single game that came out this year. Last time I bought a game within a few days of launch was Halo 3.

I am usually fairly up to date on my Nintendo consoles (right now my DS is lacking). The others I am a generation or two behind. So right now I am playing my Wii and PSX.

However PC gaming has always been one of my prefered ways of playing. I am of the belief that PC games are best played multiplayer and that the best years for that were 1997-2004. So while I may have a fairly up to date machine, I am always finding myself playing Half Life Deathmatch, Quake 2, and Tribes 2/Vengence with my friends. So my collection of lower specced machines is right now at six... Soon they will mostly be replaced with Atom dualcore machines (debating on Ion) so my powerbill wont take the massive hit.

So I'm not the only one who pops out Quake 2 from time to time anymore. Also, your post reminds me: I only just bought a DS for the first time last month, so I'm behind there too. The only time I ever bought a system while it was still new was the 360, bought mine November 2006. And yes, it RROD'ed eventually. Works fine now though.
