Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Late to the Party: a thread for people of sooo last year

Post by J T »

I'm a scavenger of bargain bins and used stores. This means I'm kinda behind the times most of the time. I often find out about things long after they were popular. I get all excited by these cool things I missed out on in the past and I want to talk about how cool they are, but everyone is done caring about them.

This comic made me laugh because it is totally me. I just bought the Orange Box this year and have only recently passed Portal, Half Life 2, and HL2:Episode 1. I'm blown away by these games, but everyone else was blown away a long time ago.

This is a retro site though, so I can't be the only person with this problem. This thread is for me and this thread is for you. This is the party for people late to the party. If there's something old (games, music, movies) that you just found out about, and now you want to share your love even though everyone else is over it, please post here. :)

Yeah i totally hear ya. I don't usually like to buy games that have just come out simply because I'm still trying to finish the one or two games I bought a while ago. Being a parent and having a full time job doesn't allow me to play games that often during the week. This pretty much guarantees that I'm usually not playing the latest and greatest title. In my case, I'm currently trying to get through Fallout 3.

I just recently got a Dreamcast, so am currently blown away by Capcom vs SNK. Capcom and SNK characters in the same game?! Awesome!

This thread is working out perfect! I'm only in the beginning parts of Fallout 3. I went to Megaton and I had heard you could nuke it from reading online. It turns out that's a choice you can make pretty early in the game, so I saved my state and then did a little legwork to nuke the town just to see what would happen. I don't want to continue the storyline down that path, but I was like "whoa. shit. I really got the bomb to go off!"

Also, I just bought a Gamecube not too long ago and got Capcom VS SNK 2 evo. I also had never played a Capcom VS SNK game before. I love seeing how the different fighters from the two companies square off against each other! The game's a blast, but the gamecube controller isn't very well suited for it. There's even some weird gameplay mode where you can make the right stick execute all your special moves just by pushing in one direction.

I'm a little behind you guys. I'm still in the process of beating Legend of Legaia, Final Fantasy VIII, Metal Gear Solid and Xenogears. I Just recently beat Gran Turismo 2. I've yet to play Halo 1 even tho I have a Halo edition 360 I got from a pawn shop for $45. I have this hangup about beating the games that I wasn't able to play back when I heard about them however many years ago acquaintances were telling me how awesome awesome they were. Remember those NES advertisements in Gamepro that were filled with lists of small print games for under $10? I acquired all of them I could remember as soon as I was able to and played them when I was supposed to be doing homework. I am a prime candidate for Backloggery, except I could give two shits about who knows about it and I'll drop a game like a smelly hat when it pisses me off. I can make enough time to get to them. I'm in the process of playing about 35 games on various systems. I revel in the fact that it doesn't matter what life throws at me I'm still immersed in enough interactive, challenging entertainment to last me the rest of my natural life. Retrogaming is so much fun! All the games we enjoy are immortalized and can never get less fun. It's the same reason seeing awesome 80's movies for the first time is the shit! That's why we're here, right?

I've currently got a Wii and PS3, but my mind seems to be living in the 90's which can be a small problem when selling some current gen stuff at work.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I just got General Chaos at a pawn shop just a few days ago for $5. Can't wait to try it out as soon as I figure out which box has my Genesis in it.

While i love retro gaming, it doesnt take the place of modern gaming in my life. They are both there side by side. I am always playing something that just came out on my PC or Wii while playing an old NES title.

Recently I played "Don't look back", "Iji" in terms of freeware; Boktai 3 (Japanese only), and I hope to finish soon Megaman & Bass and Solar Jetman and pick up either Jet Set Radio or Xenogears again (so even in terms of "Together Retro" I'm well behind). So yes, I'm always years behind.

Ivo.

People are really sick of me talking about my recent journey into Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

I seem to be stuck on PC games from the first half of this decade. I'm finding a lot of fun in these since I'm not really in the mood for some Genesis or Saturn but I'm not really in the mood to fire up the PS3. Also enjoying Colin McRae Rally Mac.
