Pokemon R/B/Y Tourney Pool Results finished!

Post by DaGamingMonkey »

After selling a fair amount of extra systems on ebay I did a little shopping myself. Placing bids on multiple auctions containing pokemon games red/blue/yellow

To make a story short
I ended up winning more of those auctions then I planned
(one was a great deal, one had a bid pulled, one had later gen games I couldn't pass up)

So here I am with a whopping 9 copies of pokemon for gameboy, 2 pokemon stadiums, and 3 transfer packs. I decided I needed to sell my extras because there's no point in having that many copies

2 yellow
2 blue
5 red

Before I put them back on ebay my friends showed tons of interest in buying from me for nostalgic reasons. Sold pretty much all of them to friends and thought of the idea for a tourney.

First Generation Pokemon Tourney

Starting August 16th each competitor has 1 week to build their team.
Leveling as much as they can before August 23rd.
On the 23rd we are all meeting to battle our teams in Stadium on the n64.

Rules
No glitches allowed (honor system) besides rare candy lvl 100's blow
Each trainer is allowed a team consisting of 1-6 pokemon
Due to his absolute dominance as a character Mewtwo has been banned.
Due to the "no glitch rule" Mew is not available for teams.
Trading is allowed between other competitors only. (mainly used for evolving)

23rd Game day
Trainers will be split randomly into 2 groups of 4
Each trainer plays each other trainer in their pool once on stadium (will have 2 tvs running matches to prevent it taking to long) resulting in a win/loss ration of either 0/3 1/2 2/1 or 3/0
Trainers are then placed into brackets according to their pool records

1st place from pool A plays last place from pool B
1st place pool b plays last in pool a
2nd from a plays 3rd from b
etc

After brackets are set the real fight for ultimate nostalgic bragging rights begins.

I will be attempting to record the fights, or as many as I can. To cut together later for the fun of it.
I will be keeping track of statistics, fight results, teams, lvls etc
Up till the actual tourney is being placed I cant really put out updated of teams (everyone is being very secretive about their builds.)

Let me give you some information about the competitors.
(to protect the identity and cover my ass I will be using their nicknames that they have used for their game characters name)
This is a VERY competitive group of friends

Name: Strife
Sex: Male
Age: 23
Game version playing: Blue
Starting Pokemon: Squirtle
Last time I talked to him (August 18th) he mentioned a 71 lvl pidgeot he was using to exp all the rest of his team. He will not actually be using it in the tourney though. He also has been losing sleep over the game. Having trouble catching Z's because the music is stuck in his head.

Name: Slinky
Sex: Male
Age: 20
Game Version playing: Red
Starting Pokemon: Charmander
Slinky really started all the hardcore playing. It seemed like just fun and games until he challenged us all to put money down. His level 46 Charizard one day in the competition didn't help either. Every since hearing that everyone has been putting extra hours into their game. He's also been bragging that his Machamp will destroy us all. ( I'm pretty sure everyone will be running some sort of psychic so his claim is unlikely) Rumor has it he broke the no trade with outsiders rule already, picking up a magmar from a friend. Hopefully it was just a legit just caught magmar not previously leveled and it wont cause dramatics.

Name:
Oreo
Sex: Male
Age: 18
Game Version Playing: Blue
Starting Pokemon: Squirtle
This guy talks the most, he was one of the first to back the tourney and shows nothing but the utmost confidence. Only information I know is he has said that he does not like blastoise and will not be evolving his wartortle. Update: He also is running a high level pidgeot.

Name: Mads
Sex: Female (I know wtf!?)
Age: 20
Game Version Playing: Red
Starting Pokemon: Squirtle
The 3rd person to choose Squirtle and the only girl in the competition, she also happens to be my girlfriend. Didn't force her into it and she actually wanted too and has talked more shit then half the people in on it. I know her full team but to protect it from the other competitors I wont disclose all of them. Only info, her lapras build is looking nice. She also had an idea of running 6 alakazams for the hilarity of it. Would it work?

Name: Brandon
Sex: Male
Age: 16
Game Version Playing: Yellow
Starting Pokemon: Pikachu
If I had to guess he's the least experienced in first gen pokemon due highly to his age. He's asked a lot of questions and although he may have a very unique starting 6 I don't know if he has the ability to power level with the rest. Yellow is also a question mark. I'm not sure if there will be an advantage to using it or not. Being able to get all 3 starters could be nice but most likely having pikachu as your main electric? Not so much

Name: Swag
Sex: Male
Age: 18
Game Version Playing: Red
Starting Pokemon: Charmander
The cousin of my friend Strife. Most of the younger guys we know because of him. Very little is known about his team. Even his starting choice is not 100% He sucks at just about every video game but the later generation Pokemon

Name: Chris
Sex: Male
Age: 24
Game Version Playing: yellow
Starting Pokemon: Pikachu
Came late to the party he was the 8th and final addition to the competition. He got his game on tuesday 2 days later then the rest. Last time I checked he only put 2 hours into the game. He may be the weakest link here

Name: DGM
Sex: Male
Age: 23
Game Version Playing: Red
Starting Pokemon: Bulbasaur
I was the only one to go with bulbasaur. My team has been acquired and is almost complete with the moves I want for them. The staples Alakazam and Golem will be in my team.

That's that, any bets on trainers?
Keep an eye out on updates.
I'm going to try best I can to get video through a dazzle.
At the least set up a video camera and ghetto record it.
Results will be posted over a 4 day period just to keep it interesting for the few of you who will follow.

Monday
Final teams for each competitor and statistics (hours played, pokemon caught etc)

Tuesday
Pool play results
Some video

Wednesday
Bracket results up to the finals

Thursday
Finals and Champion!

Thanks, hope to hear your feedback

Damn, this sounds like so much fun. Kinda envious, as I want to be in this! I know I'd win for sure..heh heh joking. But really I'd love to see a video of this tourney. Please keep this updated as much as possible! Oh yeah, I'll bet on Strife.

This is a great idea, too bad none of my buddies would do it. Excited to see the results.

This is an excellent idea. Come to think about it, when RBY was still current, my friends and I never got to actually hold a tournament because there were always a bunch of people who backed out b/c they felt under-levelled or insufficiently EV-trained.

The game's changed so much, but I always have the warmest spot in my heart for the original 151.

that would DEFINITELY work. alakazam has a deep move pool, and top-tier speed/special stats. plus, psychic types were overpowered back then since there were no viable bug/ghost moves. alakazam was almost like a less-broken mewtwo.

Glad to hear people are interested in updates.
I don't think anyone in the group really has much of an idea about EV training or anything too hardcore. I just recently found out about it. (I didn't play very competitively growing up)
Also no one who is in the tourney is going to see this thread (except maybe mads) so I'll update you guys on my team at the end of each day.

I'm starting to get pokemond out......

Don't give in. But only if you want to be the very best, like no one ever was.

Oh MAN that is a great idea! Seriously... I've been wanting to do something like that since I first played Red. I still have my copy with all 151 pkmn and only 16 hours of play with the game beat.

I do work at a Play N Trade and we have a million of those gameboy transfer packs.... you sprang a great idea for a retro tourney at our store! thanks!

By the way, the rules are great! Mind If I borrow them and give you credit?

Go for it.
Just get us a heads up when you do it.
I would follow one by someone else.

If this one goes well we're going to follow it up with
gold silver

Then emerald ruby after that

If we don't go crazy first
