Yep, he's right. Anything that circumvents copy protection is illegal according to the DMCA.

My point is. Copy protection is illegal since you can make as many backups as you wish and they are preventig you from doing so.

Nothing about that is illegal. I'm not sure where you're getting your information.

I think he's talking about fair use. Which is ok but the problem is the process of making a backup generally involves the circumvention of copy protection scheme. That simple process is illegal under the DMCA. There's no getting away from it if you live in a country that has the DMCA in effect such as most European countries or the USA.
