Sad but true that only the genuine ones are any good.

I had a 3rd party PS1 card I put in the other day, on the ps2 it wasn't recognised at all, on the ps1 it stopped the controllers working!

I have a fair few sony cards and even after 10 years the saves on them are fine

Another check for Official First Party. I've only ever used them and never used 3rd party. I've never had a problem with first party.

You can copy from any card via usb with ulaunch or action replay. The first is easier and free.

Go with first party Sony cards.

Thanks for the info on memor32 and ulaunch. I'll have to look into those for backing things up.

I still wanted a high capacity card though, so I looked around a bit and found there is a company called NYKO that is supposed to make good cards. I found one of their 32MB cards at gamecrazy for $15 and picked it up. I'll have to let you guys know if it outperforms those crappy MAX cards made by Datel.

I know the Sony cards are reliable, but I have a lot of games and I tend to jump across games frequently while only making little bits of progress. It helps if I don't have to shift through lots of memory cards trying to find the one that has the game-save I'm looking for.

Since you have a phat PS2, how about getting a PS2 hard rive and transferring your saves to that?

You can do that? :shock:

I guess I should get one of those since they go for cheap nowadays.

Does any game use it besides Final Fantasy XI?

How many is a lot?

8MB is a pretty good amount when you make sure to check the back of each game's case.

For example:

8MB=8,000KB

Most PS2 games will require 100KB or less meaning that you have room for tons of games on that card without any worry for the most part of filling it up.

If you're going to go that route you'll want to make sure that the HDD includes the HDD Utility Disc as well to manage and maintain it, as well as to enable the ability to save games to it:
