Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Yeah, I a BIG fan of the heatshrink tubing for a very professional look, but mine ended up looking fine with just electrical tape anyways. You just gotta now how to do it right. And also, I put mine back in the RF box too (only so I could distinguish them easier, the Saturn and Genny cables look identical).

Awesome mod! I already have S-video cables for the Saturn and Genesis model 1 but what would be really awesome is if you could do this for the Turbografx 16. The only official way to get composite out of there is an an add on (turbobooster or turbo-CD). Anyone know if this would work with a Turbografx?

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Well I answered my own question when I cut apart the RF unit for my Model 1 Genesis. The RF unit I cut up was the same as the one here
http://cgi.ebay.com/Official-SEGA-RF-Sw ... .m14.l1262
I had used this RF unit for the TG16 in the past so I knew it worked with it. Inside the cable is a simple RF cable (coaxial) not one the three wires as in a RCA cable. Apparently the Genesis 1 did output RF as presumably these systems did as well (since they all take the same kind of RF unit) and this mod won't work for them:
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 8-Bit
Panasonic 3DO
Atari Jaguar
Sega Model #1 (Older Version)
Turbo-Grafx 16
Sega Master System
NeoGeo Home System
I didn't lose anything since this was an "extra" Genesis RF connection and the results of my test were probably apparent to most here before I tried it but hopefully this will be useful to other newbies.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
dbeamer407, I don't own one but I was under the impression that the Genesis 1 (And the later SMS) took 8pin din?Apparently the Genesis 1 did output RF as presumably these systems did as well (since they all take the same kind of RF unit)
For which making a cable when be very easy, as 8pin DIN are still fairly findable in electronic stores compared to the 9pin miniDIN used in this guide.

Yes the Genesis did have an 8pin DIN, but it output it's RF signal through a dedicated RF jack like the SNES and NES as it's 8pin DIN as the tech just wasn't cheap enough yet to make an RF like the Genesis Model 2's.emwearz wrote:dbeamer407, I don't own one but I was under the impression that the Genesis 1 (And the later SMS) took 8pin din?Apparently the Genesis 1 did output RF as presumably these systems did as well (since they all take the same kind of RF unit)

Ahhh! Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up Mod Man.
Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
I just realized... Any one that turns an RF box into a composite cable, save the switches from them. They're perfect for system mods (like a region mod on a SNES or Saturn, or 50/60Hz mod on a SNES etc).
Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Hmm, I threw the RF switch out.
Are they 'neat' switches that have the ability to be screwed into place? If not then you would most likely want to fork out the small amount of change for some nice switches that you can screw into place properly.

Yeah, I'm a little bit of a pack rat, I save anything that can be useful.
As I recall, they don't have screws. But I would just use a little bit of hot glue to secure them in place. Hot glue works wonders.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
so, I want to pull this off. and i hope you guys don't mind helping me a bit. i am not too good at soldering and i am new to it also, but i think i have an idea. i just have a few questions. first of all, do I only need to twist the ground wires? as in we don't have to solder the copper wires together at all. Also i was looking all around the house for my thin solder that i used for modding my ps2. well I can't seem to find it (think my one of my family jacked it thinking it was theirs "shrug") and the only solder i could find was thick. could i use this solder? I understand that solder is cheap but i have no money at all this week, when i say NO money i really mean i have no money (side from a few cents or so). I am really in the mood for something like this to do so that's why i don't want to wait until a week or so. also, emwearz, if your wondering about when i told you that i have a model 1, well it turns out that i mixed the models up and that i really have a model 2.
so I'm sorry about that. thanks guys.
