Diminished Value

Post by CAv »

I own a few games, most notably FFVII and Marvel vs Capcom II, that have been made a whole lot less valuable/special since they were released digitally. I could gripe about digital distribution all day, but this frustrates me. I know it sounds a little selfish, but it's really annoying. Does this bother anybody else?

Games that are released digitally and have no enhancements to the original version will still have some value...usually above that of the digital price. SoTN is a good case study. While the price is certainly less than in the past, it still holds a nice premium over the digital download price. In the case of MvC 2, I can see that price dropping much more since you now have HD rendered backgrounds and above all, online Vs. mode.

That being said, it is frustrating to think that at any moment, your favorite retro game could be put up for digital distribution and lower the price of said game.

Well it goes both ways. It's easy to be frustrated that a collectible game you own suddenly lowers in value, but those who just want to play the game should be entitled to access without the premium price. Personally I think a lot of people end up hoarding or seeking out games they don't truly love, just because they are valuable. I'll be burned at the stakes for this, but to me half of the NeoGeo games out there are mediocre and not worth one tenth of what they cost. Still people collect them because of their rarity. That's fine and dandy, but is a shame when they get upset that those games because available as digital releases and at a rock bottom price. Regardless, a retail copy will at least always be worth more than a download.

I say keep the digital downloads coming. It'll be great when games like Radiant Silvergun or Suikoden II become available to those who don't wish to shell out the after market prices.

This is being rather selfish, and this kind of idea leads to the collector hoarding that the neo-geo scene is infamous for. Great games should not be some elite little club where it costs top dollar to get in...great games like those should be played by as many as possible

Not to the average person but ones that do sell games as a business now have one more thing to keep there eyes open for : When the next game that is keeping their store open will be out on digital distribution.

I always think its unfair for a company to screw with the used and older stuff just to line their pockets more. Much like the Cash for Clunkers program is screwing over how many hundreds of used car sellers now?
The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.

The prices on retro games are cyclical in nature, like most retail items.

Give it a while, and FFVII will be back up. Though, sell it to me if you don't believe me.
