Whelp, Ive decided...

Post by newt42 »

...fuck system modding and emulation. I like legit copies much much better. Imonna save up money and actually buy legit copies of valuable games I want. I'm sorry, but modding consoles and emulation cuts the nostalgic feeling right in half. I like collecting and I like real things. It doesn't seem right showing off my collection of bootleg Saturn games.

Yup. I'm still gonna get a Saturn at some point in time though. Hopefully I will someday hold a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga... Ha! Listen to myself talk!! lol

In my opinion (although I'm sure someone disagrees), not only does having a real copy look nice to "show off", but purchasing something and owning the physical media makes you appreciate the game much much more (and make you more likely to play through it) than if you have 50,000 games sitting 4 clicks away on a PC where you can just keep cycling through games when you bore with one.

IMO, copies are just as good as the real thing. I get this stuff to play with, not show off. If someone comes over, I don't say "hey look at this stack of shit", I say "hey, want to play Die Hard Arcade?" It's digital, there's nothing lost when you play a copy (well, except for the dreamcast), so why bother? If it weren't for piracy, so many great classics would be out of the reach of so many. Plus, hacking consoles is just fun.

Now I do think playing games on the original hardware is preferable when possible. So instead of emulation, or collection, I'd prefer a flash cart or mod chip whenever possible.

I find that, when one gets serious into collecting, you eventually amass so many games that there realistically isn't enough time to play through them all and maintain a normal life (or so says my ps2 rpg collection, sitting in my room, mocking me and my "responsibilities"), emulation or not. I essentially have to just make a mental commitment to one game and just stick with it because if i don't, i just keep "cycling" like dlmvii mentioned.

Oh, and the one plus side to emulation, at least on the xbox, is, you still get to play on your tv and all the games on the nes/snes/genesis that required battery back-up for the saves will never die on you (though my twenty year old zelda save file is still kickin so maybe it's not all that big a deal).

The way I've been going for my disc based games is I purchase the Japanese original and mod the console to allow myself to play a burned copy of the translation.

Been thinking of doing that myself for Rent-A-Hero No 1 (Xbox).
