Dynasty Warriors ~ Seriously, which one is best?

Post by Mozgus »

I've never touched this series because, well....its a big series. It's intimidating. It's also notorious for being milked. If someone was going to play only one of the PS2 entries, which one would it be? Are any of them completely self contained? Do any excel in areas where the others fail? (Music, graphics, whatever).

I think you mean Dynasty Warriors, yes?
I only played 4, which was decent. Of course, this information isn't terribly useful having never played any of the others.

You might want to consider Samurai Warriors as well. The graphics are ok but the gamplay is lots of fun. Pretty much all the Dynasty Warriors I've played had the same story with upgraded graphics for each entry. So I'd try the latest one if you want the best in the series. Crimson Skies is a great series as well if your looking into that genre.

I played 2, 3, 4, 4 extreme legends, 5, 6 and Orochi warriors. Every game is almost identical except for minor makeovers and the addition of new characters. The story is of the Romance of the Three kingdoms so it's the same in every iteration. My favourite one so far is 5 because every character had their own story, it was most aesthetically pleasing, and I never had a favourite character in the series till I used the new character Guan Ping. It's entirely mindless hack and slash. The enemies are also very stupid and will rarely do anything other than run themselves into your blade. I felt that six was crap because it was a massive letdown looking like it did on the ps3. There was pop up everywhere, enemies would randomly disappear around you, and nothing noticeable was changed. Orochi warriors changed everything up by allowing you to take three characters into battle and switching them on the fly but this also resulted them in watering down the already simple abilities and attacks of all the characters.

I have part 2 and part 4. I bought 2 because it was dirt cheap and 4 because I heard it was the best in the series. I'd say go with 4.

I've also been cautioned to stay away from the 'xtreme legends' and other spinoffs, with the exception of Dynasty Tactics.

I'm a huge Dynasty Warriors/Musou fan, i've played most of the releases, including all the spin-offs. Personally there's 2 i'd reccomend on the PS2;

Firstly, Musou Orochi 2: Maou Sairin - the Musou/Warriors Orochi games combine both Dynasty and Samurai warriors characters into one series, and the 2nd is pretty great and pushed Koei's overused graphics engine to it's limits. In this series you make a team of 3 warriors that you can switch on the fly.

Secondly, Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires - the Empires versions of Dynasty/Samurai warriors titles adds a strategic element to the gameplay thats sort of like a lite version of Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. This alone makes the gameplay far more compelling and addictive and thats what makes the Empires games my favourite of the series - the basic goal is to unite all of China under your rule, and you have to manage all sorts of things like the defence and production of your territories, the positioning of your officers and various diplomatic tactics and such.

Also, if you have a PS3 or are getting one soon i'd reccomend two more;

Musou Orochi Z - this PS3 version combines both Orochi games into one package with a few extras and improved graphics.

Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires - while the plain version of DW6 had a few problems, Empires fixed the gameplay to an extent and also has a new style Empires mode that allows you to be an officer under a AI ruler.

Dynasty Warriors III (PS2) is widely known as the best in the series.
Dynasty Warriors 5 (360) a strong second.

I love Dynasty Warriors 3, it's a very addicting game

Sounds like we can't settle on just one.
