You can open your controller up and slightly stretch the spring, making sure that it does not lose its shape at all, and put it back together and you will get a slight increase in firmness.

But as the actual problem is the plastic grinds away, that's the white powder you see around your joystick, you can never really 'fix' the issue without replacing the joystick box, you can buy them on eBay.

Use some silicon grease to lubricate the mechanism and make sure the spring is still in good shape.

Years ago, my friend thought the white powder was some sort of lubricant. He was convinced that if he opened up the controller you could then sprinkle some baby powder in there and it would work better. I think he only managed to ruin his controller and waste baby powder!

But alas, there isn't much to save those sticks. Hori makes a nice controller that has a joystick similar to that of the Gamecube's. They are pretty hard to come by unless you use ebay...and not too cheap either, but work great and will last much longer than the N64 stick.

Wish there was an easy fix
Smash bros and Mario party 1 wrecked my controllers very early in their lives.

Think of it like the oil crisis, but with N64 controllers.
