the 6-button Saturn pad is #1, followed by the Dreamcast. I love how the d-pad pops out on the DC pad. Makes it easy for technical thumb motions.

funny how the winning pad in this poll, is the one that most people have not even seen in their lives. I remember the N64 pad, and the PS1 pad without owning one, but I don't even remember the Saturn pad, despite playing with it a few times

I think you are confusing your experience with everybody else's.

no the PS1 sold about 100mil. The N64 30mil. The Saturn I think didn't even sell 10mil. So I think it's obvious there were more people familiar with the gamepads of the first 2 compared to the saturn. I'm not saying it was a bad controller, rather that most people in the world have not seen one. plus the N64 controller was so strange that it leaves quite an impression

Oh right mis-understood there.
It's still possible that many people have used the Saturn-esque pads for the PS2 and the Madcatz Fightpads for 360/PS3 which directly ripped the Saturn pad off.
Plus there's quite a Sega bias on this forum and several fighting/shmup enthusiasts who regard the Saturn controller as the definitive 2D controller. I don't think it's that much of a stretch that the Saturn is the voted the best controller.

The Saturn 3D Pad (the analog one) is actually regarded as one of the best controllers and is comfortable and easy to use.
Now the original US Saturn Pad was actually a good all around pad as well, but it's largeness made it difficult to use for kids and made rapid twitch movements on the D-Pad slightly sluggish due to it's long throw.
My Consoles:

Astal's considered quite good. And I'm quite fond of the action/platformer Shinobi Legions, though that's partially due to my enjoying the crappy live action sequences between levels.

The Saturn 3D pad is awesome. Anyway, I'd like to see one of these polls for handhelds. I'd start one but I'm not familiar with enough handhelds to do it proper justice. Plus, I would just end up listing NGPC 5 times with the assumption that it would surely win regardless of the competition.

Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
My fave controllers are the SNES and Xbox 360. SNES was my all time fave for many years, but recently I've really come to love the 360 controller, despite the d-pad which is a huge issue.
I guess it comes down to what type of games you're playing. 2D or other classic style games, it has to be SNES. But for modern games I like the 360 pad. I agree with the poster dreaming of a 360 pad with a Saturn or Dreamcast d-pad dropped in ......
