PS1 RPG that is 2D and...

Post by SpaceBooger »

...you can save anywhere? I need a new game to play while I'm running.

I have a modded PS1 and an ASCII Grip (1handed controller) set up for my treadmill. I am looking for a game that is 2d, since 3D and the rotating of the camera is hard with a one-handed controller, that you can save anywhere.
I recently finished Lunar both games) on it and that worked perfectly since I could save it when I was done running. Yesterday I tried "Beyond the Beyond" and it worked well until I was done running and in the middle of a dungeon and had to play for 20 more minutes to get to a save spot. This wont be good when I run before work...

So, can you help me to think of any 2d PS1 RPG games that you can save anywhere?

I don't have it, but Arc the Lad collection is 2D. I can't speak as to whether you can save everywhere or not. The only other RPGs I can think of that would be playable one-handed don't let you save everywhere.

Oh! I just remembered. Final Fantasy Collection and Anthology have a memo save, so you can save everywhere for the purposes of being able to stop and go to work. But it's really only a suspend, so you lose all your progress if you die after loading.

That would work. Ill look into that... I am in in the middle of FFIV (2) on the SNES right now. But I can play V and VI on the PS1

One thing I would caution you about: FFV and VI are not optimized well, so there is a noticable delay before battles start. I personally found it made it unplayable after many years of playing my SNES copy of VI (I got the collection as a gift); your milage may vary.

I own the FFIV/Chrono Trigger for PS1, and can tell you that after playing SNES roms of both the speed for entering battles, menus, etc. made it completely unplayable. Final Fantasy origins was barely better.

Amish Samurai, I think you mean Anthology (V and VI). Origins (I and II) runs like butter.

I don't remember are FF7-9 3D?
Do you need to rotate the backgrounds aren't they prerendered?
If not I can play those and save on the overworld map right?

They're 3D characters on a prerendered playfield. You don't need to do any rotating, but you can't always get to the world map.

As I recall the world map can be rotated, but it never is necessary. As mentioned, though, you're at the mercy of save points, which includes the world map.
