What was the most recent console game to use passwords?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What was the most recent console game to use passwords?

Post by RadarScope1 »

Here's a goofy trivia thread to chew on.

I've been playing a couple of SNES games lately, Pilotwings and Skyblazer. Both use passwords. For some reason I got to thinking about how these games were released WELL into the era of battery-backed saves but used passcodes because you advance purely by level, not with stats or anything like that, and of course the carts were cheaper to manufacture without a battery.

These days no console titles use passwords (that I can think of, handhelds may be another story). What was the last major game to use them? I imagine it would have to be some late-cycle N64 game or maybe even a PS1 game.

The Last major game I could think of is Twisted Metal 2, that game has no save states, its all done with passwords.

My guess is the PS1. There were probably a couple other unpopular games on later consoles that used passwords, but I can't think of any.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

I recall Iridion II for the GBA. That's about it...

I think the ps1 or n64 was the last console to have passwords. I thought it was pain in the ass to write down the codes, back in the genesis days I remember doing this all the time.

I think the first Crash Bandicoot on the PSX had the option to save (if you had a memory card) or use a password (if you didn't). And I think this was really cool, because not everybody had a memory card back then...
