Achievements

Post by SpaceBooger »

I know this has been mentioned before, but I think we should incorporate them into TR.
We could give out little graphics for signatures (maye the "r" favicon) for each achievement per game.

For example Captain Commando could be:

One Achievement Point for the following:
  • Beat the game once with each character (meaning you have to beat it 4 times)
Beat the game with 3 credits (continues) or less
Two Achievement Points for the following:
  • Beat the game with 2 credits or less
Three Achievement Points for the following:
  • Beating the game with 1 credit
Five Achievement Points for the following:
  • Beat all the bosses without losing a life during that battle
I don't know it would just be an idea and it would have to be based on the honor system.

For longer games we can have achievements based on time:
Get to X part of the game in 1 hour... etc

What do you guys think?

Kinda like that... I just don't know how fond I am of making people play on a pc to video/screen shot stuff.

NO!

Achievments and trophies are for all of the mindless drones on XBL and PSN, and don't qualify as an added gameplay mechanic.

I agree and disagree.
I like goals both short term and long term ones.
For this month's TR game I played it on MAME and beat it the first time. Now there is no real motivation from the club to play again and nothing really to talk about. If we had goals that we all were working on then we probably would have more discussions about the game. Otherwise, I don't know if I am going to play the game again and now wait 20+ days until a new game is featured.

This is a man who gets it. Getting 30 headshots to unlock a bonus weapon is good. Getting 30 headshots to get a little number attached to my name is bad.

I don't know anything about XBOX achievements since the only current gen. system I have is the Wii. But I think they are a good thing if done properly... and if we are making them they will be made properly.
I guess we can call them goals that way we don't tick off those who hate achievements.
Also what is the real difference between them and high scores? If 30 headshots got me a higher score at an arcade I would try for it wouldn't you try to get your initials at the top of the list?

Achievements have led to a new class of the OCD gamer that has to get a max gamer score for all of their games. I've seen things like complaints on PS3 boards that some or other game doesn't have trophies, and thus is somehow reduced in value. I've seen fucking professional reviews that boil down "The PS3 and 360 versions are exactly the same, but the 360 has achivements". Why the fuck does that need to be called out? Why the fuck is that a selling factor?

And don't get me started on some of the achivements I've seen. In Lost Odyssey you get an achivement for equipping your first piece of equipment. That's not an achivement. That's one step removed from "Achivement: Turned on the fucking game".

I remember the days of Goldeneye and Aliens vs. Predator (PC), where they had some kind of task that would require you to play in a different way than normal, or play extra skilled, and you'd get some tangible in-game thing for completing the task. Or games like Super Mario 64, where you only needed 75 stars to beat Bowser but there were even more to get. You could collect them all for some self satisfaction, as opposed to waving around your epeen to all the strangers on Live.

I don't really have a problem with the concept of a game having some kind of reward system for outstanding play. What I have a problem with is the Live (and now PSN) implimentation of everything needing to have achivements, thus you cheapen the whole thing and give 13-year-olds another outlet for their inadequacies.

I agree and disagree, sometimes Achievements just add a little more longevity to the game. I don't buy games for the gamerscore and I don't play them for the gamerscore, hence my dismally small number. Some games however, have really good achievement goals that are an addition to the original game. Such as the achievements in Skate where it prompts you to 100% it doesn't give you stupid achievements like in sports games or whatever just nice little additional challenges to complete and be rewarded for.

It depends on the game I think. I like the achievements in Monkey Island for example, some are silly like the one where you drown Guybrush, but there's the others like the marooning everybody, which is a nice prompt for you to play the game again to get the alternate ending and the cannon ball achievement. It's just there to reward you for playing the game thoroughly. By doing these achievements you get to see additional dialogue you might not see if you played it through normally instead of doing these additional tasks. The pirate conversation when Guybrush is drowning is particularly entertaining.

Those kinds of achievements aren't bad, Niode. I just feel that the mandate that all gaves must have achievements ends up creating a bunch of bullshit ones.

Plus, there's the inevitable "grind another 30 hours" RPG achievements. You know, max level each character, learn every skill, open every chest, etc.
