Yeah I don't know why they went with the design they did. Still, I find the N64 controller way more comfortable for 3D games than the Playstation. The layout never made any sense to me.
I suppose kids these days don't know any better. Those poor children who's first console was the Playstation.
Which console do you think has the best controller?

For people like me who experienced 3D control before Sony decided to steal it feel that analogue sticks should be vertically aligned as opposed to horizontally.
I was just stating the order that I really experienced the controllers. I grew up playing the 2600 and NES and pretty much the only system I didn't have growing up was SNES. Didnt get a Playstation until after I had a N64, so I really played a lot my early 3D games with that controller. Still think the dual shock controllers are the best.

I totally agree, those shoulder buttons were always awkard to use. Your hand never just rested there and was comfortable like on controllers with triggers in that spot. Plus, there are 4 of them. I only have two index fingers. And if you are going to use those buttons to fire in games like FPS then doesn't it make more sense that it's a trigger?Niode wrote:

You can't use both L/R 1+2 buttons at the same time without it being extremely awkward.
The d-pad is garbage. Always has been.
One new flaw since the advent of Analogue controller/dual shock is the fact that almost every single game uses the analogue stick as it's primary method of control, why is it still in a stupid place? Is Sony really that ignorant to not realise that two sticks (that were clearly an afterthought) bolted onto the middle of the controller is an awkward placement?

I've always been in love with the Saturn Model 2 controller. It's light, it's responsive, it fits in your hand as if it should be a part of the human body.
If a wireless version of this were to be made, I would buy a couple without hesitation. The closest thing we have to it would be the XBOX 360 controller. But Microsoft still got that wrong with the clunky dpad and 4 face buttons.
6 face buttons and 2 shoulder buttons is where it's at.

I just hope the PS controller does not get the highest percent. I can't stand a analog after thought controller. If you gave the PC-Duo RX/PC-FX controller shoulder buttons I think that would be the best 2D controller. It is like the Saturn 2 controller but has more weight to it and a stiffer D-pad plus two selector switches that can change the controllers paramaters on the fly depending on the game. I like the Gamecube controller for 3d games. I give it to the N64 though for being the most versatile controller.

Use your index and middle fingers so that you can have a finger on each button and use the controller in the natural position it was designed for.the King wrote:I totally agree, those shoulder buttons were always awkard to use. I actually like the PlayStation controller set-up. It's just the d-pad that I'd want to fix. Also, the Six-Axis/Dual Shock 3's 'Trigger' shoulder buttons are just something I hate.
Re: Which console do you think has the best controller?
That's what I'm talking about, using two fingers on there is just awkward as hell. That just isn't comfortable to use for any lengthy period of time.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Use your index and middle fingers so that you can have a finger on each button and use the controller in the natural position it was designed for.the King wrote:I totally agree, those shoulder buttons were always awkard to use. Yeah the Saturn 3D controller was earlier than the N64 in western countries but it was never used properly on any full 3D titles, not to the extent that Mario 64 utilised it. That's why I consider it the first proper 3D title with full 3D control.
The thing that annoys me is that analogue was tacked onto the Playstation controller when Nintendo did it, then Rumble was tacked onto the Playstation controller when Nintendo did it. Motion control was tacked onto the Playstation controller when Nintendo did it. Analogue triggers was tacked onto the Playstation after Nintendo/Sega/Microsoft did it first. It just seems that as more innovations come out, Sony will always be one step behind with a 'me too' solution that just isn't anywhere near as good, I'll give them the dual shock, that was the only thing they've done right with the controller, everything else is just a poor-man's version of something already existing.

It's me or all Double-analog controllers have awful D-pads? The GC one sucks, the PS2 one sucks and the Xbox one sucks.

What's wrong with the GC one? Seems fine to me bit small but still works. The Xbox Controller S is perfectly acceptable too.
I think the only ones with truly terrible d-pads are the 360 controller and the Playstation controller. The Dreamcast doesn't have a fantastic d-pad though and that's a single stick.
