What Movies Show An Interesting Look Into the Future?

Post by racketboy »

I have a thing for movies that involve time travel and/or take place in the future.

My all-time favorite movie is Back to the Future and Part 2 has a pretty interesting look into 2015. (only 8 years until I get my hoverboard)

There are also a number of other movies that I've enjoyed that have a futuristic view to them. Off the top of my head...
I, Robot - I love the parking garage setup
Demolition Man - every restaurant is a Taco Bell
Minority Report - of course, the motion-controller computer
Blade Runner - the whole replicants thing

While it takes a completely different spin, I've heard Idiocracy is pretty good.

What other futuristic movies have you enjoyed and what technologies or developments in their portrayal interest you most?

It's not a movie, but Futurama. "You can't prove it won't happen."
That's one of my favorite shows on Adult Swim.

My list of favorite Prime Time animated shows looks like this:
1. Family Guy
2. Futurama, South Park (can't decide which is better)
3. Robot Chicken
4. Simpsons

10000. King of the Hill :D

I heard it's being resurrected, for 13 episodes at least... yay!

Yeah, I've watched all three only once. I guess it's about time to watch them again.
But back to the topic, IIRC, the Terminator movies didn't show much of the actual future in them...
it would be the same thing for the Matrix

A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Bicentennial Man
Idiocracy
Mad Max
The Postman
Waterworld
The Island
Serenity / Firefly

And of course the ultimate "what if" scenario of mankind evolving and maturing to the point of actually being a civil race overall... STAR TREK!!!

If you couldn't tell I like sci-fi.

I watch IA, but don't remember much of it.
Bicentenial Man was pretty good.
Serenity was awesome and can't believe I forgot it.

The Postman is pretty good if you like these post-apocalyptic movies or future developed societies. The Postman, if I may add is a dvd I own which warranted a purchase, is post apocalyptic like Mad Max. It wasn't too well received by critics but I liked it. It stars Kevin Costner and adapted to film by the gentleman who did Forest Gump. Hell, it's no Forest, Forest Gump. :) But it's good.

After a large war there are remnants of society about living in segregated towns guarded to ward off uninvited visitors. There is a man who started up a militia that are called something like "Eolas." This traveling man who earns by performing Shakespeare is later forced to endure induction into the Eolas clan and they are a clan that are segregationist (race, but the movie is not about race, so probably where the book was more indepth and why the movie was criticized) and murderous. ETc, Etc I suck at synopsis and I am tired of typing LOL.

Reign of Fire with the Batman actor was a bit of the future but with dragons. LOL

Also I like Ghost in the Shell the movies not because I am an anime nut. It's because I really like the tone it takes with the development of computerized "soul." It kind of connects with Metal Gear Solid here. That tradition and culture, memes coined by Richard Dawkins, are things that are like genes. That the computer can become man in an metaphysical sense. So what interests me is what is man? Once he is fully pinpointed by scientists on the scale of genes. Once the computer can automate thought processes in the brain. That famous neurologist that discovered that through the little holes on the top of the brain little nanowires can be inserted to the brain to stimulate through with electrons. Is a memory matter and if so, is the matter able to be reproduced from A brain to B brain through electrons through a wire (the internet). I'm stupid and rambled too much, sorry! lol

Not a movie but Seraph put The Island and that is an adaptation of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, good stuff.
