I really like top view racers, and due to the art style they aged decently.
Micro Machines (1 and 2 I guess, before they went 3D graphics) mostly without weapons.
Probably not so known, SuperCars II
The PC classic Death Rally which inspired GBA Karnaaj Rally.
Not quite top view, but also great is (Ivan "Ironman" Stewart) Super Off Road, and there are other great games in isometric view like the Skidmarks series.
6 Bit then F-Zero was excellent, I completed it back and forward loads of times.
Road Rash was pretty good as it was a fresh idea, as battle racers before it were with cars only.
Outrun, my fav was outrun europa on my amiga. Although the megadrive ones were ok.
Then the 32 bit era came and this is when racers really took off.
Ridge Racer, I remember playing the arcade machine. I actually bought the game ridge racer before I had a playstation. I got the console and it was (seemed to be anyway) an arcade perfect conversion, again beat it back to front loads. The game was and is fantastic.
The rest of the series just got better each time, I thought that rage racer was the hardest though.
Gran Turismo hasn't aged well, when you play it again its like a video tape stuck on fast forward at the time great but its not something I would hand to someone and say play this awesome game anymore.
There were so many good racers on the PS1 I can't remember half of them.
After the PS it just got better, sega rally 2 on the dreamcast was great, Forza, more GT's etc
Own: Spectrum 48k x2, Amiga 500, NES, SNES, Gameboy Color x 3, Gameboy Advance, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Master System II x 2, GameGear x 4, Megadrive x 2, Saturn, Dreamcast x 3, Playstation x 3, PSP 2003, PS2 Slimline, PS3 Slimline 160GB, Xbox, Xbox 360 Elite
I think the original OutRun is a pain to play because the graphics suck. The sprites are big but not very well defined and takes a lot of time to know if you are going to collide or not. However it still impress you when you drive under those colums, other games should learn their lesson.
Out Runners on the other hand is a marvel of that kind of technology and OutRun 2 looks nice even if it's 5 years old. F-Zero GX looks better than most Wii games which is a shame
Looking for a cool game? Find it in my blog! Latest post: Often, games must be difficult http://eriktwice.com/
I think Virtua Racing, especially in its 32X incarnation, still holds up.
Did anyone ever play the POD racing game (the first Pentium MMX game, not the Star Wars racer). It's been a long time, but I bet it still holds up too (now I want to play this later today)
That said, the Star Wars Pod Racer game is still pretty good (especially on the PC).
Some others off the top of my head (that I don't think have been mentioned):
Road Blasters
STUN Runner
Cruisn' USA
Jet Moto 1 and 2
Super Hang-On
Motocross Madness 1 + 2
Crazy Taxi series
I haven't played old school consoles in a long time (i.e. 16/8bit ((like what bit are we up to now? did we stop at 64? 128 bit[ches!])))
but,
Road Rash on the Sega was pretty sick, beating people over the head with tire irons while whipping through the desert on a motorcycle, spilling, good tiiiiiiimes
I hate to this say this, and it barely counts, but San Andreas. I never multiplayer raced that but I'd love to. The cars in that game were so f-ing good. It felt like driving a real car sort-of, whereas in most racers you feel like you're driving a speed demon or a locomotive, in San Andreas, it was like, a real car, that I just happened to be driving really really fast (and well). Drifting ftw.
besides that I suck,
can someone out of the blue recommend me a really good racing game to play over a PC lan thats free or pirateable?
As in tasty
*ya know what game hasn't aged well, Lower GI Tract Rally, that game is blowsville
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for me.
There was a game on the NES called Cobra Triangle that was a racing/action hybrid where you rode a boat armed with guns. It was a lot of fun back in the day and I think it still has a lot playability now.

Yes I had POD Gold and it was phenomenal at the time. I was hoping Trackmania would capture its essence but it's not quite as fun or exhilarating.
As for my picks I would go with any of Sega's Model 3 (and later) racing games. I wouldn't go near any of the other outdated racing games at the arcade.
