Which Racing Games Have Aged the Best?

Post by racketboy »

I've always been a big fan of racing games -- the genre is a natural for adrenaline rushes.
I know I have some of my personal favorites -- for nostalgic reasons or otherwise.
Which racers do you think hold up best over time?

Some of my picks:
Outrun
Super RC Pro Am
Super Off-Road
Road Rash
Re-Volt

Theres a bunch of nostalgic picks I could list, but that could go on for a while....

Personally, I loved Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit. It had great music, great tracks and some of the best exotics. Plus, it had a showcase of the history of the car company and the development history of the car.

NFS 2 is high on my nostalgia list. I really should dig that one back up in the near future. That and Test Drive 5. I got those both with my new (at the time) Pentium II PC. I had a ball with those both.

F-Zero.
The original is the best incarnation in my opinion.

Seconded.

Of the PSX Ridge Racers, I think Type 4 was freaking amazing. The graphics still hold up very well, and the frame rate is silky smooth. I also loved the story sequences in between races. Best arcade style racer ever.

And Speed Devils on the DC!!

Test Drive Le Mans 24 Hours is still fun and looks great, well at least the Dreamcast version

Test Drive Le Mans on DC holds up very well for me.

For some reason, I still love The Duel: Test Drive 2 for the Genesis. The graphics are pretty sorry, but it really does remind me of driving a Porsche through normal roads and traffic. There's a need to rush to win, but you are only racing against one competitor, so you can still enjoy the drive. I wish there was a next gen game like it.

Road Rash/Skitchin'/Super Hang-on don't hold up as well in my opinion, but are still fun to play.

F-Zero has always been fun, and probably always will be.

If you want to go a little but further back, Night Driver was the first racer I ever played, and I loved using the paddle controls. It's fun, but my favorite Atari racer is Grand Prix. For those who haven't played it, the cover art looks like this:

It may have had the most accurate cover art for any Atari 2600 game, because it actually looks like the game you play (minus the rainbow trails). It still is fun, because its controls hold up, and is still a challenging racer.

Ya know what? I haven't given the original F-Zero much of a try in years. I couldn't really get into it too much way back (same with the GBA ones -- maybe it was just the GBA controls), but I love the N64 and Gamecube versions.

I might have to give it another spin.
