Fatal Frame 4 Translation

Post by brickiemart »

How many of you guys know about this? Apparently, Fatal Frame 4, a well reviewed (34 out of 40 in Famitsu) and interesting looking horror game for the Wii is not leaving Japan. Nintendo, as the holder of the games publishing rights, has announced “no plans” to bring it to North America or Europe. Here’s the Japanese trailer for the game.

So a small group of fans to the series have announced a remedy to that situation, a translation patch. Here’s their website.

The patch they’re doing is unique, here’s a description cut and paste from the site.

“We are attempting a very ambitious patch which will patch the original game on-the-fly, something that to my knowledge has never been attempted before. Should we succeed, the patch will be read off an SD card and run through the Wii Memory Management menu, and will function as long as you have the original game in your disc drive.”

What do you think? I was disappointed to learn that Fatal Frame 4 was not coming stateside. I can thank Eternal Darkness for introducing me to horror themed games, upon finishing that game I was anticipating FF4 for a good while. I’ve been tempted to pick up an import copy of the game, but have held back because, A. I’m skeptical to how well the patch will work, and B. I’d hate to pay all that cash just to have Nintendo turn around and say “Just kidding, here comes a US release!” Also I am wondering if the patch works well, will the game’s import price sky rocket. If all goes as planned, the patch should be done by the end of this month.

I saw this a while ago and kinda forgot about it. It'd be nice if it works well. And I sure can't complain if it's free. However, as with the new Trace Memory: R, I don't want to import it, just to have NOA release one here.

There are like half a dozen Wii games out in other territories that I'm waiting for...NOA is not doing a particularly great job with their releases.
