PS1 - any models to avoid
I'm toying with the idea of picking up a PS1 and modding it. Are there any particular models to avoid for the PS1?
Re: PS1 - any models to avoid
Keep in mind that early versions have the FMV skipping error - The fabled scph1001 included.
I also believe that the early models do not work with dualshock controllers either.

I have heard of some of the first models 1000 series (I think they have RCA plugs on them) that the plastics in the cd drive were cheap, ending with a system that will only play upside down. One of my friends has a modded PS that just won't work right.
Good luck

What are you hoping to get out of modding it? For example, if your goal is to play backups then you can get a SCPH-7501 and a Game Hunter to plug into the parallel port.

Yes, I would like to play backups. I was in my local comic shop picking up some Dreamcast games and noticed the pile of PS1 RPGs that he had that were going for $50+. I also like soldering wires/chips and since PSX is a simple machine to mod, I figure I give it a go. I guess I like to collect consoles.MrPopo wrote:What are you hoping to get out of modding it? That game hunter looks like a neat device. PSX mod chips are pretty cheap ($3-4) so I'm going that route for now.
Re: PS1 - any models to avoid
I have a 5001 model that wouldn't load the second (retail) disc of FF7. Loaded the third one though lol. I have a chipped 7501 that has been a solid console, I would recommend this model.
And by the way, SnowKitty sells pre-modified PS1's for a good price. I was in the same boat as you and I thought it'd be easier to pick up one already chipped (rather than hunting down the model I wanted, buying a chip, and installing the chip).
