I miss the outlandish characters. I think that was his best point. Each bad guy had a gimmick-- the knife guy, the handcuff chick, the fire blower, etc. I think he hit in on the head with the importance of the kitsch factor of beat em ups. They don't need gritty realism, they need entertaining oddballness.

To this day I still can't believe that The Simpsons and X-Men arcade BEUs never came out on consoles. Talk about a major missed opportunity.

Simpsons was released on the C64 and for DOS. Granted they are not the best ports, but they exist.

DOS:

Xmen was sadly never even given a bad port.

I had the DOS port of Simpsons but I would have preferred it on Super Famicom.

Ofcourse we would have liked a proper console port. I would love to have one of the 4 player Sailor Moon beatemup or the 3 player Aliens vs Predator one. If only those guys working on the AvP BOR mod would finish it.

I think to make a true beat em up you have to have it set in the 80's. Look at SoR, Final Fight, Double Dragon...really any BMU. Check out the outfits. Thats what makes a BMU. Tight blue jeans, white hightops, a belly sweat shirt with the sleeves cut off, bandanas and fingerless gloves. And mohawks. Thats the secret to the BMU genre imo.

2d sidescrollers like Mario and Sonic tend to work as 2.5d sidescrollers, would that kind of evolution/upgrade work on BEUs?
