I'm kinda stuck on getting a PS3 in the near future or not.
I do want the current US/JP model with full backward compadibility. I hear rumors that Sony will be releasing a hardware revision on the US/JP to replace the PS2 chips with software emulation like they are doing on the EU models.
I'm wondering if should get one of the current models now because I am thinking that they will become more sought after (= more expensive) after any future hardware revision.
What do you guys think?
Will the original PS3 models become rare? Buy now or later?

Interesting question
It's no doubt an interesting question, but is it not a very competitive option to keep (or get) an old PS2 to offset this? I doubt that any used PS3 (even though "superior" for b.c.) is going to be more expensive than a new one and still sell; perhaps I'm wrong. I can definitively see new in box "old" models selling for more, however.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. If you are truly worried, go buy it, keep it in box for the moment, and if you eventually get to the point where financially you can definately keep it, I'd dive in. I forsee that the software emulation will be about as good hardware emulation, considering how tiffed people are at Sony atm and how tiffed people got at MS about their sucky bc. If Sony screws that part up, I'm sure the PS3 will bomb dive even further...

I think there were comments by Sony people that they would be focusing on new releases for PS2, and not so much for already released titles. Software emulation will never be as good as hardware, as long as they keep similar efforts on both, right?
In any case, I just though about something interesting (as someone ignorant about these things): when the number of "new" software PS3s is much higher than the "old" ones, could it happen that the "software" ones actually surpass the number of titles emulated? I say this because I think even the "hardware" ones need some software to emulate parts of the PS2, and perhaps the software part of the emulation is different enough that firmware updates make title X emulated on "soft" and not on "hard" - I could see Sony skimping on taking care of the "old" models backwards compability.

Not true. In fact, if the 360 told us anything, it can be better. Considering you can add filters and such, you can make the games look better. But the compatability is pretty bad for 360, so bleh. Software can be as good as Hardware or better, especially when you take into consideration Sony is the one writing the emulator, not some small team reverse engineering the system form a SDK and console.Ivo wrote:Software emulation will never be as good as hardware, as long as they keep similar efforts on both, right?

My understanding is the PS3 hardware emulation is nearly 100% backwards compadible with all PS2 and PS1 games since a firmware update in January for the 200 or so games which were not working correctly.
I'm also hoping someone finds a way around the PS3 PS1/PS2 region locks, as I really want to retire my US PS2. I have an 80GB hard disk installed in it and use HD Advance 3.0 to rip Japanese games to the hard drive and play as well as some US ones.

I think that getting the first revision or the second is always the best way to go. Allow me to explain my stupid reason why.
I bought the first PSP as a pre-order, why?, because I knew it would have the highest probability of being the easiest to crack and un touched by Sony patching up vulnerabilities. I want the homebrew.
Likewise on the PSX when they had that Serial type port in the back to allow one of the modchip gamefinger type things. Of course you could go with a internal modchip but that was not an option for some. The earlier PSX models had the port while the newer ones had it removed.
Xbox consoles as well; 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 ... further revisions get difficult.
So for me I want either the first revision of the PS3 or the second revision. I would wait for the second revision of PS3 because of it's stinking problems here, there, and everywhere. lol Always keeping an eye on the scene to see which revision is the one to go with.
