Helping poor people is a worthy use of tax money, most of us end up down on our luck from time to time and would rather give those people a hand than have them throw out on the street. I am a great beleiver in the good old Welfare State, and I think that people who think it should be abolished because they are priveladged and dont care about other peoples less fortunate situation have a fairly selfish attitude.

Now if you are talking about people who are poor because they are lazy and choose not to partake in society - well thats a different issue but not all poor people are that way from there own doing.
I hear what you're saying and I agree that a welfare state is a good thing. I just think that there are a lot more people taking it for a ride and exploiting it nowadays. When it was set-up in the 1950s I think its intentions were in the right place, but since then it has become too lenient. It was meant to be there to help people temporarily through times of need, but now we have a lot of people just exploiting the system.

Do you have proof to back up that claim?

not really to be honest, it's just my own individual perception. I'm not trying to force it on anyone - just giving my opinion.

I pay so many taxes it's not even funny. The one that enrages me most is a tax reminiscent of feudalism, I have to pay a big ass sum every year to the navy because apparently those who live somewhere near the beach or near a river are on their territory.

Not that cool when you are unemployed for months like I was. Until yesterday, when I got a job (hooray! I laugh at the face of the financial crisis!).

for the most part I'd like to think we (the people) make our own money and not live by the handouts of the state.
You took the quote out of context. He was saying if you take the per capita GDP of his country and compare it with the US his country still falls behind the US.

MrPopo is right
free oil, that the media makes you think we are better off than you are and can afford stuff you can't, is a big lie. You make money more than us, and richer than us. The stereotype of the rich sheikh is so wrong.

your right I did. no offence intended, I guess the concept of how much the state pays me isn't something I concider. so I just hung up on the phrase.

and I really don't walk around thinking Saudis are richer than I am, or an average American. I know some are, but so are some Americans. people everywhere are individuals.
