Neo Geo CD controller question!

Post by Lokkenjawnz »

Alright so I've been playing a lot of NGPC lately (just Metal Slug 1 though, my other games don't work! Bah!), and this has me feeling empty when I use any other control stick, due to the NGPC's sheer awesomeness. So my question is: is the control stick on the NGCD controller the same? It looks very similar, thusly my speculation.

And extending my inquiry into the NGCD: is it a fairly worthwhile console to own? I'd like to get an AES/MVS, but they're out of my price range. The CD looks like it at least has ports of the majority of the best Neo Geo games, but do they play the same? I know the loading times are notoriously bad, but that's not a big deal for me. So what's the general verdict, is the NGCD a good choice for the thrifty Neo Geo fan?
My Want List!

Consoles: Sega Master System, NES Toploader, Genesis/32X, Sega CDX, SNES, 3DO FZ-1, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox Halo Edition, Wii, PS3
Handhelds: Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, Neo Geo Pocket Color, GBC (Atomic Purple, Pokemon Edition), GBA (Pink OG, Silver SP, Spongebob SP+), DS (Phat, iXL), 3DS, PSP (1000, Go)

The NGCD pad stick has the same feel as the NGPC stick. NGCD is pretty good for a budget gamer. You get titles made up to '99. There's also exclusive titles just for the system. You get arranged and original music for most games. You can also use AES joysticks for the NGCD.

But, for a little extra more, you could buy a consolized MVS setup.

IMO, the Neo Geo CD system is TOTALLY worth it if you want a Neo Geo without breaking the bank. The long loading times really aren't that big of deal on a lot of the games. Unfortunately, it is a big deal on "newer" games like KOF '99, Last Blade 2, etc. If you want to play some KOF '95, Samurai Showdown 2, Fatal Fury Special, Windjammers, etc., the load times are in the same league as the Playstation. Totally manageable. The sound is also better than the AES(or MVS) in most cases, since it's CD. So that's a plus. Even more so, the Neo CD has S-Video without modding it. It looks very nice, especially next to my non-modded AES.

As for the control pad, the little joystick does feel like a larger version of the NGPC one. It has that nice little "clicking" thing going on and feels very solid and well made. Another nice thing is that the control port is the exact same as the one on the AES, meaning that those awesome Neo Geo arcade sticks will worth without a problem. It also runs copied CDs if you want to test before you buy, keep your original copies sealed, etc. It's a great system, as far as I'm concerned.

Neo Geo CD - better sound, better video, affordable, longer load times resulting in a lot of games from KoF '97 and newer being almost unplayable unless the clock on your wall says 4:20
Neo Geo AES - cool as fuk, will probably give you a hard on just owning it, bloody expensive games, shitty video quality unless you modify it
Neo Geo MVS - beats me, I don't own any MVS stuff

the neo geo cd controller feels very similar to the NGPC. It's a lil less clicky but very firm.

it's getting more affordable these days. I'm glad to have mine, bought it direct from SNK USA over the phone no less. Came with 3 games and KoF 99 at the time. Very sturdy system.

The games play exactly the same with the exception of load times. The early games , pre 99, play without much loading. The new titles and fighters had it rough. For Last Blade i would just set the handicap all the way down and play the same levels over and over. It wouldnt need to load if i did that.

I have a mvs console and I actually use the cd pad for my controller...mostly due to space saving its easier to hold the controller than cleaning room for a massive custom stick. I like it...I have had aes and mvs and honestly mvs is the better way to go for prices, and the controller....for being a joystick controller I give it an 8.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

If you decide to start a NGCD collection, I have a CDZ for sale. It comes with 4 games.
KOF 95, 96, 97 and Fatal Fury 3. It also comes with 2 arcade sticks (shown)
and a Neo Geo CD Pad. $170 shipped to North America.

You won't find a better deal than that.

They usually pop up in various shops here for anywhere between 500-2500yen each. Sometimes more in places like Akihabara in Tokyo (double?). Conditions vary.
