This is the exact reason I bought a PS3 and haven't bought an X-Box. I absolutely hate it when people say to me, "it's not a big deal, because M$ will fix it for free." That's not the point. I don't want to have to wait weeks and weeks with no machine until it arrives in the mail, ready to RROD again later on. What if I want to play the 360 in a few years, when the next generation is out an the warranties are all finished? At least with the NES, it can be fixed fairly easily. Same with the PS2. For the 360, you're pretty much screwed.

I'll be able to use my PS3, and my Wii, in 10 years in all likelihood. Will you guys be able to use your 360s? The best answer you can give is "I don't know." I really don't understand why so many people have bought 360s.

That, actually, is not true. The fix for a RROD is actually fairly simple. Between the X-Clamp and the poor GPU solder, it's a recipe. All you have to do is replace the X-Clamp with something more secure (wing nuts, for example), and put some arctic silver down for the GPU, and it's fixed. No more overheating.

I've seen several friends lose 360s to hardware failure and after investing so much money on games, accessories, online subscriptions, and controllers I understand why they all go out and buy new ones...

My real question is what people will do 5 or 8 years from now. Much like the rest of you I obsessively collect games for systems, especially when they're 'retro' or out of production. But what about when 360s are out of production and all the units available are all still having hardware issues? How will you play your games? Even if the next Xbox system is backwards compatible with the 360's games, how will you play the titles you've downloaded?

These are the things I lose sleep over.

My brother's 360 was having a completely different problem. It wasn't giving the Red Ring; instead it would freeze midway through loading up the 360 logo. Getting that fixed would have cost money. So we just left the 360 on for several days and it went RROD on us. Huzzah for free replacement.

Which is a very good thing to lose sleep over, in my opinion. The way I solve it is: I don't download games. The only way I play games is if I can get a copy of it in hard media, or DRM allows me to make a backup copy (like Steam). XBLA does not allow me to do it, ergo I don't buy from XBLA. I rather play games on the original hardware, anyway, not emulated as on the Xbox.

As for my Xbox RRODing in the future, as you said, it'll be discontinued. So I'll just buy another. By that point, it'll only be $50 at Gamestop for another, and I won't blink an eye. And since I don't have downloaded games, I can play my games on whatever Xbox I wish. Also, I prefer having two of every console to begin with, so I'll be purchasing another Xbox once they go down in price. No matter the circumstances, if it's a retro system, I always have at least two, sometimes three of the hardware (in several versions) just in case it breaks. This Xbox will not be an exception, and will probably have even more just because of the potentially unreliable hardware. (I say potentially because my hardware hasn't shown any problems.)

At this point, though, as I tell everyone, I have seen many, many more PS2s back in the day that have broken than the Xboxes. Yet, somehow, people excuse Sony when they don't excuse Microsoft. Even though Microsoft extended warranties, and Sony still refuses to acknowledge some problems. Explain that one to me.

I've gone thru 4 360s. The 2nd one I had I preformed the X-Clamps fix on it but still broke down after 5 months after that. I finally picked up one with a jasper motherboard in it so I'm hoping this will be the end of my bad luck. I've actually been dishing out money when I get a new one so it's pretty annoying.

Really? After it RRODs it's easily fixable? Not that I need a 360 anytime soon, but if it is easily fixable, it means I'll eventually pick one up for a chance to play through Fable II. Nice.

Then again, after reading the following posts... are you sure it's so easy to fix? Do you have sources of how to fix it and how reliable the fix it? Links please.

Also, about the downloadable content... is it really limited to only one specific system? You can transfer the PS3 downloadables to multiple systems under your account. That's also an annoying thing with the Wii, that you can't transfer between systems. They almost encourage people to use emulators on homebrew with that kind of stuff.

I have this thought that folks who get RROD must be doing something to restrict air circulation for the unit. I've seen my friend put stuff (cable box) on top of his unit.

The system runs hot (at least 175w) so good air circulation is a must. Even better, a special fan to boost air flow.

I would think that if you do this, your chance of getting RROD would be very low.
