Name Games That Don't Seem to Fit in a Genre

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Name Games That Don't Seem to Fit in a Genre

Post by racketboy »

Even though most games are essentially copycats of previous games, there are a handful of games that don't seem to fit in a traditional genre or are hybrids of existing genres.

I want to make a list of every game that we can think of that fits into these categories.

Here are some off the top of my head:
Twinkle Star Sprites: combination puzzle and shooter
The Guardian Legend: shooter / action platformer combo
River City Ransom & Guardian Heroes: rpg/brawler combo
Typing of the Dead -- not too many lightgun games powered by Keyboards
Seaman -- kinda simulation, but unlike any other
Animal Crossing -- same type thing...
Odama - war strategy/pinball...

How is that Odama game... I was looking at it while at the store earlier and was tempted to buy it. I didn't as I was there for Contra Shattered Soldier and Viewtiful Joe already (which they didn't have Contra... but Viewtiful was 5 bucks... yey!).

the pinball comment kinda makes me want to pick it up. Oh and WHAT the hell is the microphone used for?

As for titles... ermm.. modern games? I'm not very good with modern games. What about Pikmin, I don't know what genre Pikmin fits in... puzzle probably... but not really.

I'll have to think on this one.

I've only gotten around to playing Odama a few times. It's interesting, but it's hard to get used to and you can't use it with the Wavebird so I hate having to hook everything up to play it. You use the microphone to give verbal commands for your troops.

I got it on clearance at Target so I just picked it up as a novelty if nothing else.

Lemmings, when it was released blew my mind.
I'd got it in my head (back in 1991) that all game genres were pretty much exhausted.

How wrong I was.

Crazy Taxi

Shenmue - Shenmue is considered and action RPG but I've never really considered it too actiony or RPGish, I thought it was something completely different entirely, and I can't identify it.

Post Symphony of the Night Games - They're a big mishmash of Action, Adventure, Platforming and Roleplaying. It's weird but fun.

Home Alone (Genesis) - It's mostly listed as a platformer but it's not really anything in particular. When you're defending the houses sure you jump on things and collect items but the main goal is to get the Wet Bandits to surrender from taking too much pain, which you can do by setting traps around the house before they come in, and by confronting them with random weapons you've made up out of pretty much anything. I always thought it was a fun, unique game for it to be a movie based one.

Toejam and Earl - What would you really call this game? I have no idea.

Nights into Dreams - A very obvious choice, you can't really fit it into much of anything if you try, there isn't any good justification backing it.

Thats all for now.

Um... Cabella's?

Nobody else really likes to pump out tons of horrible hunting sims for dying consoles. Those guys are real troopers.
