So I watched Midway today while at work. It starred pretty much everybody that didn't end up in A Bridge Too Far. Heck, two of my favorite actors appear in this film: Charlton Heston and Toshiro Mifune. And yet, even though I enjoyed it, I just can't say that this film is as good as it's pseudo sister, for a couple of reasons.
First, it interspliced old war footage, and clips from older films, and it also reuses some of the same footage multiple times(the exploding planes on the aircraft carrier is a prime example).
Second, a few of the actors and actresses just aren't up to snuff, and by that I mean the guy playing the son of Heston's character, and the girl playing his fiancee. Their acting felt forced and their dialogue was just poor at times. Her first line just made me groan, and the scene where the plane explodes and he catches on fire, I couldn't help but laugh as it was just, well...cheesy. Between these two problems, the film just feels campy. Add into it the "base" on Midway and Mifune's forced English(all of the Japanese speak English), and it just drags the film down.
Still, looking past these flaws(and some historical inaccuracies), it does give a nice look as what all went into Midway and just how lucky we really got. It starts with a sepia-tone rendition of the Doolittle Raid, and the intelligence ploys and strategic work in the film help build up the tension as both sides try to out-maneuver each other.
And it's still far better than that other campy Pacific war movie, Pearl Harbor.

Whenever I'm confused with an Anime/Manga etc.. I either Google it and get the info I need from a reputable or official site or find some book or other medium that can help explain it to me before I go back and re-watch it to see what I missed.Dylan wrote:Oh. I guess my real criticism is the lack of detailed explanations. The show is seriously esoteric. Nonetheless, I can honestly say that the majority of your insight I would not acquire even if I watched the show 100,000 times. Maybe I should just start googling things after I see them.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Even though I am on a Western binge right now, this has always been a genre that is difficult for me to get very interested in. It's probably because I was exposed primarily to the most run-of-the-mill vanilla westerns on TV when I was a kid since those are what my dad grew up on and enjoyed. I don't think I ever saw a Western in the theaters until I was an adult. I do remember the first time I saw High Noon in my mid-teens though - it was a revelation of the possibilities that the genre held - you should definitely give it (as well as Unforgiven, if you haven't seen it) a serious look.OldSchool_Boy wrote:When it comes to american westerns.I just cant seem stay focused.Although Stagecoach did keep me intreseted.Still need to see The Searchers, The Outlaw, and maybe High Noon. Its just I enjoy spaghetti westerns than american westerns.

And when you've graduated from that, and want to see something absolutely bizarre, there is always Jodorowsky's El Topo.dsheinem wrote:Even though I am on a Western binge right now, this has always been a genre that is difficult for me to get very interested in. Gonna rent this tomorrow:

I know it's a shitbomb, but shitbombs are usually a lot better if we don't expect much. Examples include:
* Bio-Dome
* Tank Girl (which made me a fan of Lori Petty)
* any film with Van-Damme prior to the death of real action films

I'll see High Noon. But not in the near future.Far far far far too many other films to see before time runs out.
I've seen El Topo. One of the greatest films I've ever seen.Just visually and morally fantastic.Ack wrote:

El Topo was one of the strangest films I'd ever seen. I thought it was great, but...weird, you know? And also extremely depressing but compelling. While I preferred the first half to the second(I loved the gunfighters), the whole movie really needed to be viewed to...I don't know how to put it..."get it."
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
It's definitely one of the best movies ever made, that's for sure.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Saw Anchorman again last night- funniest Will Ferrell movie I've ever seen. Also, I saw the DVD advertisement for Freaks and Geeks on the disc and I remembered it was out along with The Adventures of Pete and Pete...
