I played this for a little bit last week. Am I missing something, or is this game awful?
The first thing I noticed about the game is how low the frame rate is. I mean, it's really really bad. Banjo Kazooie, which doesn't require the expansion pak, still manages gorgeous graphics and open levels without compromising on frame rate at all. How did Rare fuck DK64 up so badly?
So then we get to the gameplay. My first thought is "Ok, wtf am I supposed to be doing?". I wander around aimlessly for 15 minutes and finally found the giant croc who opens a door to the first area. Or so I think. Anyway, I head over there, and collect all the bananas I can find. I get about 20 or so. Then uhh.. I'm stuck again. I look around for another half hour or so, and don't find anything. WTF. This game sucks.
Again, compare it to Banjo Kazooie. That's also a game where the main objective is collecting hidden items. But at least in BK the game makes it clear where the next area is, and what you have to do in each area.
The controls suck ass too. Get DK up on a tree top and try to make him face the other direction. He turns in a big circle and chances are you'll fall off. Banjo Kazooie on the other hand controls wonderfully. Oh, and while you're up in that tree, don't bother surveying the area around you for more bananas. The next tree over isn't even rendered!
Man, that was a complete and utter waste of an hour. This is a game that has truly aged poorly, and cannot be appreciated for anything other than nostalgia.

Re: DK64
I think most people would completely disagree with you. That game is one of the "classics" for the n64. You ought to give it more of a chance than a reluctant go through. If you play donkey kong country then play this maybe you'll appreciate it more. If you have that much trouble maybe you should use a guide. It's a pretty simplistic control scheme and if you didn't climb up the vine in the water on the first level that might be your main problem.
Re: DK64
id have to say that its an enjoyable game and you might be blowing it a little out of proportion. i agree it is not as good as banjo kazooie. and it can be hard to figure out where to go sometimes. but its not that bad. the graphics seem just fine to me. and the over all DK can be clunky at times due to his size. but i never found a part in the beginning where i was "lost". and the controls arn't too different from BK. but it is cool if you don't like it i understand. cant change anyone's opinion about what they like or not. but id take the above advice and give it one more shot. if you still don't like it, than that's cool.

Re: DK64
While the controls are similar to Banjo-Kazooie, the way every character handles in DK64 is awful.
It is practically the same game as Banjo-Kazooie, the only real difference is the characters. Especially since it comes right off the heels of Banjo-Kazooie, DK64's every single flaw shines. The game is a giant Rat Race. Their are no real puzzles, they are all just hassles.

If I were to follow up a run-through of Donkey Kong Country with, DK64, I'd probably end up crying myself to sleep wondering, how they could translate such an enjoyable side scrolling platformer into such a clumsy collect-a-thon.Whatupdoc? wrote:If you play donkey kong country then play this maybe you'll appreciate it more.
Re: DK64
Yeah I didn't really get DK64 either. Loved Banjo though. That game just oozes charm. This one just confuses me as to how it looks worse than banjo yet takes advantage of the expansion pak.
I found the game utterly bewildering at first and when I finally got out of the overworld I just found the levels uninspiring and the gameplay just boring.
I never understood why everybody loved Diddy Kong Racing though either. I think I had a faulty cartridge because I couldn't get past the first 3 races. I can't remember the exact course of events but I remember resorting to buying ONM that had a strategy guide for it and following what it said to the T and it still didn't work.

Re: DK64
DK64 I never tried, but I hate Diddy Kong Racing with a passion. I was hoping for a great kart racer to rival Mario Kart 64 in terms of awesomeness, but found myself screaming in rage every time I played. I just could not get the hang of the controls, they felt way too loose for a racing game. I did manage to get through most of the game, but eventually just quit. It was too annoying.
Re: DK64
i cant stand diddy kong racing. everyone around me seemed to get a kick out of it. i couldnt figure out why. but it looks like i might have to check out DK64 once more because its been a very long time since i played it. so im gonna reevaluate it.

Re: DK64
Eh, I'm half and half. It was a good game but definitely not the best in the DK series. Haha it's funny because I was also confused about what to do at first. And yeah, finding the next objective can be very confusing, though I MUCH prefer the Country series as a personal preference. This game is fun if you know what to do.Hatta wrote:I played this for a little bit last week. Am I missing something, or is this game awful?

I always felt that Diddy Kong Racing was like Mario Kart if you made everything handle like shit.
