Re: Difficult Gamer Friends...
I agree that it might help if you can just make the gameplay stand out by demonstrating for them. They might not grasp how they should be approaching the game at first.
There was a PS2 game, "Tsukiyo ni Saraba" (10,000 Bullets in PAL) that looked cool so I bought it, played it, hated it, and sold it all within a month. Then I made a friend who owned it. He was like "Nah man, it's great if you play it a certain way." He showed me how to get the most out of it and I was totally amazed and wished I hadn't sold it.

Sounds like a dan maku / bullet hell game. I'm all for screens full of beautiful patterns of deadly bullets, but I can see why some people wouldn't be as thrilled. I think starting them off with easy mode on Touhou games is a good start for that. I think people now just want next-gen graphics, most people don't understand how good 2D sprites look.I like the newer stuff, but I also love the look and controls of the Snes and Genesis games.
Systems: Sega Dreamcast(x2), Sega Genesis(x2), Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Genmobile (portable Genesis), FC Twin, PSX, PS2(x2), GBA, SP, Xbox 360, N64, Showcase Arcade

If you want to show them gorgeous 2D graphics on new/recent systems, then show them Wario Land Shake It! on the wii or Castlevania Symphony of the Night on the PS1.DCsegaDH wrote:I think people now just want next-gen graphics, most people don't understand how good 2D sprites look.I like the newer stuff, but I also love the look and controls of the Snes and Genesis games.

Different strokes for different folks man. When a person doesn't understand something or is confused by it, there usually scared and just and steer clear of it.
Re: Difficult Gamer Friends...
i have 3 gamer friends that love the retro and new stuff. i do have a best friend that will play mario games and things like rock band, but if i talk about deals i find at yard sales or the pawn she just gives me a blank look.

People won't care about deals or the like, unless they really care. A lot of people simply don't care about deals in general. For shame.girlracer wrote:i have 3 gamer friends that love the retro and new stuff. i do have a best friend that will play mario games and things like rock band, but if i talk about deals i find at yard sales or the pawn she just gives me a blank look.

I've known about it for a while and played it briefly on an emulator before, but only recently bought Comix Zone - it's awesome!Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:I get ridiculed for my love of retro as well, and have found that simply paying the game and ignoring whatever your friends say is a good tactic.
For example: I love Comix Zone, but all my friends thought it sucked because it was 'too hard' and they couldn't make it to the end of the first level. I spent a few minutes and playing through the game with a friend in the room and they all of the sudden got interested in it when they saw me playing as I didn't just waste my powerups and extra health needlessly. Now they'll give it and a few others a shot when they're over, as loog as I make the gameplay look good.
Anyhew, the best way to go about it is as suggested above. Whatever they say, don't openly try to persuade them. It makes one appear ingenuine to some people - play on their likes and dislikes. If they like their comics, find an opportunity to mention or show them Comix Zone; if they like a series, find an opportunity to mention or show them a related game.
Basically, they'll just stubbornly shun everything if they feel like you are trying to do their thinking for them - lead them indirectly and take them unawares.
Also, unless their self-acclaimed 'gamers' or just people that adore a challenge, I would personally suggest introducing a relatively easy (not too easy) game to most people - my brother hates any difficult 2D games with a passion; dying really annoys him; the only game he hates more than Contra is Gunstar Heroes.

Re: Difficult Gamer Friends...
I have many different types of "Gamer Friends" All ranging from the different genre's and era's. Myself, I like to think am a "all around" gamer, though I mostly play older games. I've got friends that are MMO fanatics, FPS tweakers, and even a couple that understand the concept of retro. How do we all get along? Just giving each other a chance at what we like and trying to see it.
Like stated many times above, just find a way to get them to give it a chance, and if they are REALLY gamers, it should work.

Yeah I've beaten it tons of times and find it to be my number 2 Genesis game after Vectorman. I somehow often find myself reciting lines from it as I play as well.Pingfa wrote:I've known about it for a while and played it briefly on an emulator before, but only recently bought Comix Zone - it's awesome!Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:I get ridiculed for my love of retro as well, and have found that simply paying the game and ignoring whatever your friends say is a good tactic.
