eBay Strategies

Post by Rebz »

Hey guys, I've been trying to sell stuff locally for a bit now but it's a bit tough and I think it's time to use eBay.I already registered and account for eBay as well as Paypal and these guys take 11% altogether off each sale which is kinda high. So I just wanted to ask if there's any tips or tricks you guys can give to a noobie. How do you sell for the price you want to (without using the buy it now option because I don't wanna pay the insertion fee).

So for example, I want to sell my Watermelon N64 with a controller for at least 25 bucks. How would I go about doing that? When I say $25 I mean after all the fees and stuff have been taken off. So do I start it at 25 + the 11%? Should I start at 99 cents with a reserve? Another thing is the shipping should I use the calculator or the flat rate? Should I even be using eBay or is there a cheaper way to do it? I'd like to know how the pros do it :D Thanks for the answers in advance.

I would actually recommend our Buy/Sell/Trade forum as a first resort. There's no fees involved, so if you get no bites on your items all you're out is time.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll avoid eBay when I can. Another question I have is about shipping. How do you guys calculate shipping before you even know where you're mailing to? Is there some sort of flat rate in the States or something else I'm missing? I've looked through the Canada Post website and there's only a flat rate for eBay packages :?

@ Mod_Man_Extreme we can probably work something out when I get the hang of this online selling thing :) oh and the controller's stick is limp just f.y.i.

Cool, I can deal with a limp stick as I've gota few spare gray controllers I can rip a good one out of.

For an n64 its costs anything between 12-20 dollars to send depending on where its going in canada.

Its cheaper to ship to the states than say from quebec to BC.

As mentioned above I would try listing here on buy/sell forum before going on ebay.. I would also try craigslist. They are free to list which helps!! I primarily use ebay for really rare stuff and as a last resort if all else fails due to how fees build up rather quick..8)

Yeah I've been trying craigslist and kijiji but I don't get any bites. I'm in Toronto so the Quebec thing isn't a problem. I was just wondering if there was some sort of magic number so I don't have to calculate shipping everytime I want to sell something. Something along the lines of "If I'm sending to the States add X amount for shipping and if I'm sending to another part of Canada add Y amount for shipping." What are the general rules you guys use?
