I am not sure if this is a review but I will be talking about the game.
This game got a score of 63/100 on metacritics.
GIVE RED STEEL A CHANCE.
This game was reviewed by all as a big flop and a game that totally sucks and no one should play it. As a matter of fact, I did not even think of playing it. Truth is I installed a softmii on my Wii and I bought it off the market for like $6 illegal copy just to test if the softmii worked or not. To prove my point, I even got sponge bob with it for testing purposes too.
When I inserted the game in I figured I see how this plays. I bought my Wii a year ago, and I purchased ZERO games for it, simply because whatever game I will buy for the Wii , there will be a better game on gamecube or xbox for the same price(Can you really have hard time deciding between Oblivion or Eternal Darkness and Boom Blox?) . I will be honest, the game is addicting as hell. I couldn't stop playing literally.
Its brings the main thing gaming is all about, FUN! It is a mix of shooting and sword fighting with pleasant graphics art style for cut scenes and not to mention the creative game menus. In addition, the atmosphere is great being a Japanese mafia surroundings and meeting different characters. Levels are varied and I never felt ever that I am just doing the same thing over and over again, I mean no repetition really. Missions are different and keeps you excited and all along you will be surprised by different and new actions you will have to take to complete each level.
Things I found to be not true from reviews:
*Bad Dialogue: I thought the dialogue is good and kept listening, its hardly filled with non-sense to me. Maybe it is not great but it is average to the gaming world. It also is short enough so it won't turn out to be boring
*Bad sword fighting: I was looking for sword fights because it was so much fun. Its not 1:1 and it does not give perfect feed back, but it is good enough
*Music: Music was fun, its different and sticks to your mind. Never I expected to hear such mix of music in japanese shooter.
Amusing positive points:
*Levels: Each level is different, which keeps things new and fresh. Missions vary and you really get into the story.
*RPG characteristics: I do not remember that I played a shooter with RPG characteristics. As you go along you get to be trained and acquire new skills and new guns. Skills in both sword fighting and shooting. Based on your skills and decisions you make in the game you gain respect level!
*environment: This game utilizes your environment to go through the level. You can get rid of your enemies in different ways. You can hide or bomb your way through.
*Perfect difficulty level: I hate easy games because its like just wasting your time going through them, I hate difficult games because it makes playing a chore and tiring(not to mentions makes you angry). This game puts difficult where its fun but you also have to think about what you are doing. The challenge is nice, and its not just about running and shooting.
Bad Points:
*Graphics: This game has bad graphics compared to this generation. I will have to say some ps2 and gamecube games got extremely better graphics than this. I do not even have to mention the original xbox. But it has a decent 3D graphics, it doesn't hurt your eyes but compared to this generation(and last) its not that great)
*Controlling: Ok, controlling sucks. When you play this game you have to keep in your mind that this game has bad controls. Sometimes it won't be responsive, sometimes you have to approach a guy in a certain direction to talk to him, sometimes characters talk to you without you approaching them. When you move the wiimote out of screen the character keeps turning in a 360 circle nonstop.
*Short: I finished this game in 10 hours, not bad but not much either. I do not think this game got replay value.
*Multiplayer: I think this game got multiplayer, but I didn't try it and I think it is bad.
Why you should play this game:
This game is 1 of the very rare games that uses wii motion as it supposed to. When they announced the Wii, we expected this kind of games. It is also one of the rare "hardcore" games, it is not a kiddy game. It is a lot of fun if you cover your eyes over its bad aspects.
Conclusion:
Red Steel is not a quick money making scheme. You can see how this game has a lot of thought built into it. It is very obvious that this game was meant for something bigger than this, and it had high hopes but something went wrong probably in the development process. The game is clearly unfinished and needed more time. If you ask me, if they had more time and used better controls, maybe just maybe this could have been the "Goldeneye" of this generation.
Confession: I know I will be probably bashed for this but I thought this game is worthwhile a lot more than perfect shooters like COD4. Most shooters today are just running and shooting without real story behind it. In my example, how can COD series be different or new when they release a game each year? Plus , When you play them you get the feeling you have done this before. In Red Steel it uses motion controls and sword fighting, not to mention japanese mafia story which is rare in a shooter on the opposite of COD which is the oldest theme in the videogames, war.
Tips: Switch A to be your main shooting button, I found this improves gameplay a lot even though ironically the B button would make the Wiimote like how a gun should be. If some motion or skill is hard to pull, just forget about it, use what works.
Summary: Yes its not the greatest game out there, and a lot more games are more worthwhile of your time and money. But for the right price($15 or rent) and your hunger to actually use motion controls to play a game, this is unavoidable!
Keep in mind this game is a 2006 title, a launch title, and one of the first to use motion controls. Don't expect much and you will be happy.
Give Red Steel a chance
Re: Give Red Steel a chance
When the Wii first released, I sat in line for about 12 hours. The first games my girlfriend and I grabbed for it were Twilight Princess and Red Steel. Sure, Red Steel lacked some of the polish, but I love the levels, and I thought the music was absolutely awesome. I really wish more people had given that one a chance.

Re: Give Red Steel a chance
Red Steel would have been better if they had refined the controls a bit. Especially now when I go back and play it compared to new Wii shooters the controls just feel so buggy.
Older. Not wiser.
Re: Give Red Steel a chance
Yeah, that was my biggest problem with Red Steel. I could feel the potential there, but they hadn't nailed down how to do the bounding boxes for aiming vs. movement yet. Metroid Prime 3 had it pretty damn good, and The Conduit is looking to be even better in that regard. So I'm probably going to give Red Steel 2 a try, as by now they should have figured out how to do the controls properly.

Re: Give Red Steel a chance
I liked Red Steel, I don't understand why people hate on it so much. I guess because if you compare it to COD4 (being the 'mainsteam' type of game that all the kids are playing these days) it lacks a little finesse, but I judge games by themselves and tend not to compare. That being said, I still don't see what the big deal about COD4 is.
I'm looking forward to the Red Steel sequel.

Re: Give Red Steel a chance
I don't have a Wii, but it seems like the game has a pretty passionate following. There's a lot of buzz in some places about Red Steel 2.
Re: Give Red Steel a chance
The biggest advantage of Red Steel really are the following:
*Rare motion control shooters
*NO sword fighting in any shooter
*One of a handful of games that use Wii motion controls in the way it is supposed to be.
If there were more shooters and games that take advantage of the motion controls, I wouldn't mind playing Red Steel because other games would be more worth while of your time

Re: Give Red Steel a chance
No, I won't give Red Steel a chance.
Back when the Wii came out I was 14 and that game stole $53 dollars from me that I had been saving for over a year and a half to get a Wii with 1 game. I wanted Zelda, but GameStop had sold out their Pre-order allocation, so I went with Red Steel instead as the hype and trailers looked great, the end result however is a buggy horrible mess worth $20 tops.
So no, I won't give Red Steel a chance, bedause it was an OK game wrapped up in a package that made oit look like it was somehow worth a damn.
