I thought Zeppelin invented heavy metal.

I've actually heard Queen put up as one of the founders of thrash metal, based on their work in the song Ogre Battle. Even if one doesn't agree that Iommi and the rest of Black Sabbath created heavy metal, they were definitely a major player and have my kudos for it.

Nah, Led Zepplin was not a heavy metal band.

It's generally said that Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple laid the groundwork for heavy metal.

Oh I agree with that. There is however a difference between laying the groundwork and actually being a metal band.

Iggy Pop was inspired by blues, that does not make blues punk. And really I dont think Led Zeppling was an influence at all on Sabbath. Deep Purple sure.

Little from column A, little from column B. There's no hard and fast answer here--part of it's from talent, part's from innovation, part's from sheer luck and being at the right place at the right time, that's all. Just like any other 'legend'.

I dig Clapton well enough. I agree the Unplugged album is an essential.

I think it's safe to say that the world is better for having Ian Gillan.
