Have You Ever Contemplated Selling Your Collection?
Have You Ever Contemplated Selling Your Collection?
Hey guys,
I need your opinions on whether to sell part of my collection. Specifically, all of my Sega consoles and games. I am still torn on whether I should do this. I started to collect retro Sega consoles because of the fighters and shmups, but most of the games that I want are on XBLA. So, I was thinking of selling my collection and purchasing a 360. Also, I already have a lot of capcom and snk fighters for my PlayStation(s). I hardly ever play with my Sega consoles, but I am still kind of reluctant to sell everything.
Your opinions would be appreciated, Thanks.

You're asking a bunch of retro gamer collectors. The response is like to be one of two varieties.
a.) "Dear God no! Have you lost your friggin mind?"
or
b.) "YES! Sell them to me!"

Re: Have You Ever Contemplated Selling Your Collection?
Well, I am trying to trim my collection at least, which may mean selling off like 40 or 50 genesis games. I'm trying to keep only the games I am actually going to play. I had an Atari 2600 and a lot of games for about a year and never hooked it up, I had no interest, so I sold it. Some of these genesis games I've had for a few years and never even tried them out. I'm going to have to reconsider my own collection. On a side note, I own Majora's Mask for the N64, but when I actually wanted to play it I opted to do so on the Zelda Collection for Gamecube. I'd like to play Ocarina of Time on the 64, but in all likelihood I'd do it on my Wii (playing gamecube discs) because that is whats hooked up. Hmm, some sales may be in order...

Re: Have You Ever Contemplated Selling Your Collection?
Ha, I already am.
In the process of trimming 230 PS1 games down to around 170 or so.
Which is still a heck of a lot.

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

In the eyes of a collector this is an appropriate response.a.) "Dear God no! Have you lost your friggin mind?"
Care to trade instead?b.) "YES! Sell them to me!"
In all seriousness, it depends on you. In the future, will you be kicking yourself for selling your stuff?

It's ultimately your decision. They're your games after all. If you prefer having your games all in one easy to access system then do it just don't come crying to us when you second guess your decision. I think having tangeable copies is nice.

for me there has never been a game or console that I have traded in or sold that i did not regret afterwards. If it is a case of clearing up space, or you are just not enjoying them then by all means sell them or trade them for something you do enjoy.
I find that people get into retro gaming for a number of reasons, number 1 seems to be nostolgia for favorite past systems...also retro gamers tend to become retro collectors (just like anything else) I am a collector by nature I started with baseball cards, moved into basketball & football cards and then after I randomly picked up a copy of an X-men comic while waiting for the bus to go home from Junior High school it led me into comic collecting. It goes without saying now have 10 long boxes of comics, 5 binders of cards,5 storage boxes of cards in by cramped closet in my modest 1 BR apartment. Then there are the video games, I was always a trade up kinda guy growing up, in as much that as soon as I had some money saved up when a new system came out I would trade in everything old and use the combo of money & trade in value to start off with a bang with the newer systems.
and while I always enjoyed the new systems, there wold always be times where I would think to myself, man I wish I still had game A for system B...
but that it me, everyone is different. They are after all just video games, and nothing is worth having if they are of no use to you, despite anyone elses percieved value of whatever it is, you need to ask yourself what it is worth to you and do you think down the road you will look back and think man I wish I still had this...
