I used to be a Coke addict two years ago, but in fall 2007 pulled myself together and quit Coke, and in addition to that stopped being a couch potato and eating junkfood. Lost about 40 pounds in a year and now been regularly exercising for two years (hell, I don't think I've lasted three days without some sort of physical activity).
Quitting soda is a good idea. Limiting the daily consumption is a good start. Besides the obvious effect it has on your health, you'll also save money.
Quiting soda
Re: Quiting soda
The body is not a temple, it's a roller coaster ride. Enjoy it.
At least that is how I look at it.
I smoked all throughout undergrad, but quit when I entered the MBA program. Quitting smoking wasn't all that difficult, but I wanted to quit. I'd say most people who try to quit smoking don't want to quit. I still smoke about two cigars a month though, always with a bottle of scotch, preferably Laphroig.
Moderation is the key, but you've got to let yourself enjoy the things in life you truly love once in a while.

Slightly high cholesterol. She wants me to continue taking fish oil 3 times a day forever, get some exercise and loose a few pounds. And here I thought they were going to tell me my body was riddled with cancer or something. Best to be prepared for the worse you know? Guess Ill try to cut out soda completely or just a few cans a week and start running and lifting some weights. Maybe I should look into a gym membership.

Unless you live in an area where you can't jog/run, that's a bad idea. You can get all the exercise you need from jogging or jump rope, sit-ups/revers sit-ups, and push-ups.
Set even goals for each, that increase weekly:
Week 1 (6 days a week):
20 minutes running
20 sit-ups
20 push-ups
Week 2 (6 days a week):
25 minutes running
25 sit-ups
25 push-ups
etc.
When you get to an hour of jogging, and 60 push-ups and sit-ups (consecutive) you're on your way to being in incredible shape.

Re: Quiting soda
If you quit drinking soda you will lose weight, but not much. I lost 15 ponds from stopping.
The easiest way to quit is to first stop drinking soda or any drink with caffine. Then move off any drink with corn syrup, If you drink Hi-c you might as well be drinking soda. 100% fruit juice if you want flavor, Water any other time. If you drink Fruit juices high in potassium it would help with the sodium count in your body. Good Luck

Man.. stay away from any and all diet drinks. They contain a substance called "Aspartame" which is horrible for your body. I personally don't drink any kind of soda unless its a special event or party. So every few months I might take a sip but that's it. Water keeps you lean and healthy.

Re: Quiting soda
I'm an old guy (43) but I have drank soda heavily for over 20 yrs. I was able to quit about 2 years ago and after 6 months of quitting the regular stuff I started up drinking diet soda...not really much help going to diet over regular cause it's all filled with bad stuff...anyway this year Feb I quit all soda.
In my heyday I could down a 12 pack in a couple of hours, it was alot like smoking cig's I just couldn't stop and the more I drank the thirstier I got, one day I just told myself I have to get control over myself and made a stand but it was hard and even now just talking about it I am fantasizing about drinking one...either way good luck to you and it can be done.

Now to blow all of your minds.
I do not drink water. I have never drank water. I cannot stand the taste of water.

Isn't this kind of like saying you can't stand how air tastes either?
