Custom RGB cables

Post by retrofuture »

Anyone here do these?

I've got a 5 BNC to VGA cable and a Saturn scart cable and want to join the two. I was reading the RGB primer at gamesx and was wondering if anyone has stuff to add. It looks straight forward enough but I've never soldered or cut any wires apart though so I'm little anxious. Can I really ruin anything or is there a lot of room for mistakes?

Once you've got your RGB cable and determined what kind of connector you need for your monitor, cut the existing end off the cable. Remember that you won't need it anymore. Using the console pinouts found here and an ohmmeter, you can determine which wire in the cable is attached to which pin on the connector. From that point it's a simple matter of attaching the appropriate wire to the proper pin on the monitor connector.

If you use my DB9 plug, you will need all of the wires listed in that diagram, barring the S-video signals.

Attach the appropriate wires to the proper pins, paying close attention to the quality of your work: shorted wires will mean major headaches! Once you've attached the proper end to the console's cable, you're done! Simply plug it in and play!

I have no specific experience with this mod, but i'd recommend making an adaptor instead of cutting the cables. Those aren't cheap cables and it would be a shame to ruin them. You should be able to track down a SCART socket and female DB-15 plug pretty easily. Connect the two of them (I like Cat 5 ethernet cable for something like this) and you're good to go. It's much better to screw up on a couple of $1 connectors than a $40 VGA to BNC cable. It should be pretty hard to screw up though.

If you are able to make a working Saturn VGA cable I'll pay you to make me one. :D

Nah. You you'll maybe just ruin the cable.

Oh, you'll ruin a standard computer monitor if you try to plug it into it. It will most likely squeel at a high pitch before exploding. Not a big explosion or anything, just a sorta 'bang' with smoke and bad smell.

The reason there is standard computers accept signals around 31khz and a saturn is outputting 15khz.

If you have a tri-mode monitor, one that supports CGA, EGA and VGA (since you're not technically using VGA with a 15khz signal), then you're all good. Odds are, you don't, since... most people don't.

If not, you'll need to convert the signal first with an upscanner. Google RGB upscanner for more.

Here's what I'm working with. The monitor is a Mitsubishi Megaview Pro XC-3730C.

That looks like a kickass monitor, I'm jealous. More of these large format VGA monitors should be hitting 2nd hand markets, as everyone switches to flat panels. I really need to snag me one. I would love to hook my Apple IIgs up to one of those.

It should work out i think. The Hsync goes down to 15khz, which is what you need. You can just hack BNC ends on to the Saturn cable and it should work fine. Save the VGA to BNC cable for when you want to hook a computer (or dreamcast maybe? :)) up to it.

nice, it supports sync on green. you can hook up a playstation 2 with an official component cord, and the system set to RGB. you'd just need three RCA to BNC adaptors. of course, only a handful of games support progressive scan.

as far as adapting the scart cable to some BNC's it wouldn't be too bad. I'm sure someone could probably take up the project for you.

Ah... I didn't know you were using a European monitor. You should be rock n' roll. That's a sexual monitor.

Just take the SCART cable and wire it to bnc pins (it looks like those are bnc connectors for the rgb). The whole bnc to dsub is just an extra step.

Two things to remember is:

1) Double damn check what cable you have. Euro Scart or J Scart. They look IDENTICAL, but are, in fact, different pin outs.

2) If your using a saturn, you'll be pulling a composite sync. So run it to connector 4.

I don't know if it's .3 volts or not. That's a good question.

these may make life easier;

http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/bnc ... -03200.htm

edit; or not...

If it were me, I'd actually take a saturn scart cable, hack it in half, and take out a LED and battery (AKA ghetto continuity tester) to figure out which pins go to which wires. at that point I'd wire directly to BNC's or rca's and use the above adapters.

I actually wired a saturn to a NEC multisync when i was a kid. to test it i seriously just had wires stuck in the back of the saturn AV port, wired to a DB25. ahh, the memories.
