I'd completely forgotten about this game until I found it again today. This is one of the best action platformers for the NES. The graphics are awesome, the gameplay is perfect. It's even got RPG-type elements with the buyable upgrades and the 8 different satellite robots.
Strangely I never hear anything about it...

No doubt. Shatterhand is rad. I always group it with Power Blade, Power Blade 2, and Street Fighter 2010 (only one year away from reality...I can't wait!) as the best, underrated NES action platformers where the hero wears totally awesome shades in the cover art. Are there any others??

Not in the same league, but Bad Street Brawler's cover art sports some 80's shades.

Shatterhand - Natsume at their finest.
You should also check out 'Shadow of the Ninja' and 'Choujin Sentai Jetman'. Natsume made quite some awesome action platformers for the NES, and these three are among my all-time favorites for the NES.
