Has anybody had something printed at Kinkos?

Post by jackspicer »

This may sound like a dumb question  but i have a control panel overlay that i want to print out for my bubble bobble cab, and i was going to have mamemarquees.com print it out; but it ends up costing about 60$ because of the size. So i want to have it printed out at a Kinkos, but im not sure how you do it? How do i give them the picture so they can print it out?

I suspect that they would need a digital copy on a cd or flash drive.

If you can give the a PDF or a tiff that would be best, they're better file formats for large images. If there are images of characters or trademarked images, they might not print it, I had that problem printing my MAME marquee too, tell them it is for student work and it won't be used commercially.

I tried to print out a marquee sign for my Mame arcade at Kinkos, but they said it had copyrighted images so they didn't do it and they wanted $50 to print it.I used Mamemarquees and I will probably use them for my control panel.

You're not paying that much for the paper. It's mostly for the ink and the quality of print.
You get what you pay for, really.

And yeah, you'd have to be pretty lucky to get a Kinkos person to print obviously copyrighted stuff.

Its a pain in the ass, but the reason they are so picky about copyright is they've had their asses handed to them in court by Disney, as well as many professional photographers who had their stuff reproduced their without permission.

There's a couple of way you can go about getting them to print it.

1. Kinkos has a copyright release form, basically clearing Kinkos from getting sued IF the person was using it for profit, ect. So if you sign that they have nothing to worry about.

Or:

2. Make your own copyright release form. Make a fancy looking letter stating that you have permission to copy it and that it for home, private use.

Your cost of the print is going to be expensive, but its more due to the ink than the paper. Kinkos makes its money back on a roll typically after one customer print on these things. The ink costs about 350-500 bucks depending if its UV or not and these printers have 4 to 6 print carts. They typically charge 8 dollars a square foot for their matte and gloss oversize paper and about 10-12 a square foot for other material like vinyl, back lit stock, adhesives, ect.

They do turn out damn nice though. I worked there for almost 9 years before I started my job in IT last October.
