What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

That's a lot of stuff to lump together - is something nonsense simply because it is popular? Or popular with a certain demographic? For example, neither the Potter series nor Halo has much appeal to me, but I can appreciate them as worthwhile creative works on their own merits. High School Musical and the Twilight movies, on the other hand, are generally manufactured to be emotionally manipulative and vacuous cash-grabs.

I also don't see how you can group together something like Call of Duty 4 and The Jonas Brothers. One absolutely broke new creative and technical ground for a genre of games and earns its acclaim, the other is the latest in a long string of industry-created boy bands and earns its critical scorn.

WHAT THE FUCK?! Have you ever even played a first person shooter? COD4 didn't invent the god damned genre. It didn't do a single thing new. Hell, the entire COD series didn't do anything new. COD4 is absolutely perfectly average in every way.

That has to be the most outrageous claim I've read on this forum in months.

Wrong, good sir. It was the first fps that let us beat each other to death with weapons, grenades, binoculars, and whatever else one manages to hold in the game. While yes, melee had been done with firearms, you don't know what a fun game is until you've jumped into a pit of men attempting nothing but binoc kills on one another.

I've played pretty much every FPS there ever was or is to play. COD4 did two things better than what had come before:

1) Provide an action-oriented (as opposed to tactical) FPS in a modern-day war setting. Contrast it to the Clancy games, for example, which while brilliant in their own right, lack the pacing and access to firepower found in COD4.

2) Provide a sustainable, relatively problem-free multilayer experience. Sure there were plenty of problems with annoying people online, but COD4's following is unlike any other before or since (in terms of sheer numbers alone). Frequent map packs and updates, along with detailed stat tracking and tournaments, etc. broke ground for what an FPS could be on a console.

I'll grant you that there are some PC games that give these claims a good run for their money - namely Counter-Strike and (arguably) Quake. BUT, COD4 accomplished this across both PCs and consoles - something which had not been done before. I'm not alone in my opinion - it won countless game of the year awards (as you know) for both the console and PC version. You can, of course, read reviews that point to more extensive rationale than I have provided here. To claim it is "average" makes me think you are trying to be antagonistic just for the sake of it (which fits your MO...).

For the record, it is far from my favorite FPS - I don't think the game is "God incarnate" the way that some do...but it is certainly well above average and didn't deserve to be compared to tripe like the Jonas Brothers!

Wicked City.

It was okay, but unfortunately over the top sexual content took away from what could've been a better experience. Having said that Taki's revolver was awesome.

I beat COD4, then played the multiplayer. I had a completely average experience. Not once, was I impressed about any one aspect. It does nothing new, exactly like how Halo did nothing new. Countless people will say otherwise, but I need only point to prior games as proof when they try that. I don't care what COD4 did on a console, because FPSs suck on consoles. So you're saying that COD4 sucked somewhat less than the others on consoles, and deserves an award for that. Whatever. It's none of my concern. I play genres on the platforms that best suit them.
I could easily argue that the Jonas Bros actually have more originality going for them than COD4.

Funny. I only saw it on cable once long ago. Must have been censored very much. I don't remember any sexual content.

Yeah, there were a couple rape scenes that really put me off. Tentacles too. Blech. Don't get me wrong, it's not like hentai, it's just too close for comfort. The only time anything showing was appropriate was with Arachne, because that's a good and established demonic image. Everything else was unjustified.

All FPSs borrow some ideas from one another - games that "suck less" bring together the best ideas in a way that works as well as bring something new to the table. COD4 borrowed more than it brought, sure - but it is still one of the better console FPSs to date. And awards are always given to the games that "suck less" than the others in their genre/category/platform/etc..

I agree whole-heartedly that FPSs are far better on a PC and it has always been my medium of choice. But, starting this generation, the gap is less (esp. with keyboard/mouse support) and I have come to enjoy FPSs on consoles much more in the last year or two than I ever did before.

You'd probably win as my knowledge of the Jonas Bros. goes no further than the minimal amount I have to endure while flipping through channels, watching the news, etc. I couldn't name a song, band member, etc. In fact, most of what I know of them comes from the South Park Episode :D

Speaking of which, that's a good segue into Matt Stone/Trey Parker films.

Here's my ranking:
Team America> South Park:The Movie> Orgazmo> Baseketball

I've unfortunately never seen Cannibal! The Musical, though it's on my to do list...

I can relate. I love the Berserk manga as I have said many times, but one of the main reasons why I feel the 2nd half of the entire series has suffered is because Caska is basically brain-dead and helpless now, and everything is out to rape her. I respected Caska so damn much in those first few arcs. I mean, when has Japan ever given us a strong, black, female co-lead that is respectable, smart, skilled, and was never there for fan-service? Yet now, there was like 4 separate instances where we get a closeup of her unkempt crotch, and something about to be jammed up in it. This wasn't why I started reading.
