I've never seen a MvC2 tournament here in Columbus, but I have seen multiple Smash Bros. tournaments... I think it has to do more with who's playing competitively, and I would say more people play Smash Bros. in general.Rocco wrote:MvC2 has had a competitive scene since it came out on the Dreamcast, and Smash bros. isn't a competitive fighter, it's a party game.

Not true at all. Like the other user said, people only play as cable/storm, sentinel, magneto in MVC2, just like how in Smash Bros, every competitive match is "1v1, no items, final destination". You can't call one a competitive fighter and one a party fighter. They're both, both. Watch any high ranking Smash Bros players and you'll see just how well balanced and intense that game is.Rocco wrote:MvC2 has had a competitive scene since it came out on the Dreamcast, and Smash bros. isn't a competitive fighter, it's a party game.Mozgus wrote:That is too much street fighter. And how is MVC2 seriously considered a tournament worthy game? I fail to see how something like that can be embraced by this scene, but Smash Bros cant. I guarantee Smash Bros Melee is far more balanced. I assume Brawl is too.
Now, PowerStone is a party fighter. Rival Schools, to a lesser extent. Those games, when mastered by two players, will often draw on for far too long, or even frequently be stalemates. It's like when you did vs mode in Super Dodge Ball for NES. The game lacks the depth to be truly competitive. Once you learn the timing for grabbing the ball, neither player can damage the other.

There's really no excuse not to have a SNK fighter. Blazblue made it into the event, come on.
KOF '98 UM is out on the PS2 and 360, and you can't say there aren't enthusiasts for these games. Garou was also just released on Live, in case Dreamcast copies are too difficult to come across. They are every bit as tactical and good as Capcom fighters, and there's no reason for SNK games to play second fiddle to Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Gatta agree completely. I find SNK fighters to be vastly superior in terms of gameplay and balance. Street Fighter obviously wins in soundtracks and character designs, but what does that matter in a tournament setting? I have no idea why SF is so well respected by the tourney scenes.jfrost wrote:There's really no excuse not to have a SNK fighter. Blazblue made it into the event, come on.

Why not KOF 98' UM for PS2? The game has been revamped and balanced. Sure it's old but so is TS.
Choice of games are based on number of people who sign up.jfrost wrote:There's really no excuse not to have a SNK fighter. Blazblue made it into the event, come on.
MONTHS before Evo there are signups and discussion on forums (SRK, Dustloop, Tekken Zaibatsu, etc, etc). End result is if there's a community, there's a tournament.
All of the above questions are answered simply: no community = no game at Evo. Don't like it? Then start a community and get people to these tournaments. When there are 200+ people signing up for MvC2 and 5 signing up for KoF98, the people have spoken.
For what it's worth, the SNK fans should read the SRK posts and YouTube videos by DarkGeese. He's been trying to build an SNK community in the US for YEARS, and met with constant failure. There's no external factor harming the community here. The fans just aren't turning up to tournaments.
I love fighting games, and would love to see broader variety than just Capcom fighters. But it won't happen until the community makes it happen. And bitching on a forum doesn't get the community together.

Plus, it's been my experience that nobody plays Virtua Fighter. I offer it up and people keep telling me it's "too hard," "too complicated," and "not Tekken," which is part of the reason why I play it.

Personally, I was just a little shocked to find that there were no SNK fighters in the line up. I think the argument that people aren't showing up to SNK events is kind of a moot point now. Everyone knows the SNK community in the United States is small small small in comparison to the Capcom community.
It's the same thing with the Wipeout series. People will immediately draw comparisons to F-fucking-Zero if I mention Wipeout or show them a video here. It makes me want to unload my lunch on them. The game is pretty popular in Europe but just can't find a niche here in the States. The tournament scene, though nothing compared to fighting games, is about the same - nothing going on in the US and big show-ups in Euroland and other countries.
My point in all of this is that it isn't likely to change. I personally think that Americans are deeply rooted in the Capcom fighting game style of game play. There isn't anything wrong with that but I think that SNK games have a learning curve that many US Americans (a shout out to Mrs. SC) just don't want to commit to.
I just wanted to express my shock at the lineup. No bitching.

Yes it's interesting that SNK games don't get a lot of love (particularly high-level tournament love) in the US.wip3outguy7 wrote:My point in all of this is that it isn't likely to change. I personally think that Americans are deeply rooted in the Capcom fighting game style of game play.
There's a lot of SNK love in China and Korea, which some speculate is due to the rampant/simple piracy of the old NeoGeo hardware which allowed it to spread easily. In Japan it gets a lot of play to (always at least one KOF game at Tougeki). And probably for the same reasons as China, there seems to be a lot more SNK love in South America.
Here in Australia we mirror the US. Capcom is everywhere at local tournaments, and an SNK game showing up is a rarity. There's plenty of "low level" appreciation from casual players (there's always a KOF game going at a casual arcade collector's meet), but that never seems to extend to high level play.
Speaking for myself, I enjoy SNK fighters but suck badly at them. On the rare occasion that I do front up to casual meets, I stick to Capcom games because I'm better at them (yes, I know I should probably push myself to get better at SNK games, but with kids and work my play time is limited enough as it is). I'd love to see more SNK at tournaments, but it's going to take a push from the community to make it happen. Evo and similar tournaments are expensive (both in dollars and time) to run, and setting up tournaments where nobody plays isn't good for the reputation of the tournament, nor future sponsorship.

Re: Evo 2k9 starts tommorow
well crap, my sf4 tourney is over. went 1-2 in pools. beat someone that was ok and then got two bad matchups. the players were better than me for sure, but it would have been more fun to lose in a matchup I excel at. at least that feels like a hard fought loss.
hdr remix is tommorow, and I never really had plans on doing well in it. time to pick up my chin and go get some hookers and blow......j/k.....a little
