OP, I would suggest just going with some basic composite cables for now. You can get them VERY cheap on Amazon (like 7 bucks). I have my FC Twin hooked up via composite to my CRT HDTV, and even NES games look GREAT. My Genesis is currently hooked up via RF, and it looks like crap. I need some RCA cables damn it!
