Hey guys, can we try to stay on topic here? Personally I've had no issues with PS1 or N64 emulation on weaker computers than the one I'm building. N64 can be a little buggy, but the games that I play haven't caused issues for me. Also, I've NEVER had PS1 emulation issues. It's near perfect on a PSP so I don't know why it would have trouble on an actual PC.

But anyway, that's beside the point. I made this topic to discuss texture packs. I didn't realize so few had been completed. I guess maybe just list the leading/best-looking ones for each game, regardless of how complete they are? If they're incomplete, does that just mean only parts of the game are re-textured and the rest looks like the original?

Thanks FreshChurros for the suggestion. I've seen that article, it's what initially gave me the idea to make this topic. The article is over a year old though, I was hoping there had been a bit of progress since then.

Yes, if the texture pack is incomplete some of the game will be higher res and the rest won't.

Here's a link to "all" high res texture packs, whether that an exaggeration or not. You can just google n64 texture packs and several other sites (forums) will pop up.

Probably the coolest ones I've seen are the high res Paper Mario packs, they look really good (despite some issues with a lack of frames). I don't know if I have a real favorite, because they all look very similar to me.

Show me an emulator that wont fuck up Einhander's water in the (I think) 3rd level.

I've seen PS1 on PSP as well, and it's so far from perfect.

Thanks for the link, I guess I'll look through there and try to filter them out myself. I was just hoping there might be a general consensus, but it appears that's not the case. Is emutalk sort of the center to find out about ongoing development of the various packs?

And yeah, those Paper Mario ones are incredible looking!

I guess I'm just a lot less picky than you. PSP PS1 emulation uses Sony's official emulator and just abuses it to allow any game to be played, I think that's as close to perfect as you're ever going to get.

Emutalk definitely has the largest collection that I've seen, and is the first place you should look. While there might be a couple projects scattered about, it's likely that the majority (and likely the best) of the projects will be there.

Not quite, the difference here is that the PSP is running on a MIPS R4000 at 222mhz. The PSX ran a MIPS R3000 at 33.8mhz. The systems are running very similar architecture, the only thing that the PSP has to emulate is the graphics hardware since that is the only thing that isn't the same or similar between the two systems (even that is relatively simple, since the PSX geometry was handled on the CPU anyway, the only thing that was concerned by the video chip was 2D transformation and texturing). It's fairly straight forward for a RISC based system to run software built for an older RISC system. This isn't factoring the closed system which makes optimization 1000x times easier.

A PC is running completely different architecture and there are literally millions of combinations of hardware available. This makes optimization a difficult task, let alone the fact that the PC has to emulate every single aspect of a system from scratch. No helping hands from existing compatible hardware here.

You can't compare PSX emulation on the PSP to PSX emulation on PC. There is far more work involved in getting the emulation accurate on a PC.
