And which octagonal gate he must buy? I don't think Hori make octagonal gates for their sticks and the Sanwa octagonal gate isn't compatible.

Unless he buy a JLF + Octagonal gate and replace the stock stick but that of course requires soldering/dremelling

Actually, the Sanwa octo gate will work in the Hori, you just need to drill four holes in it (and it's through conveniently placed indentations anyway, so you can't miss).

I would stick with a square gate. It took me awhile to get used to them (grew up on Happs) but I will never go back. Diagonals slot perfectly and you will learn techniques for rolling quarter circle and half circle motions. You don't HAVE to hit the corners as long as you trip the micro switches.

Like I said, I might buy it just to try. By the way you describe it it seems like a crap shoot it you try just to trip the switch, like you increase the risk of missing it. But I'm new to this stuff so meh  .

Nevermind, I'm actually getting the hang of the stick. To my knowledge Japanese players use square gates so do as the Romans do.

But you only do that when you're in Rome.
