I think the PS2 is "too awesome to die" but I took this to mean retail/mainstream presence so I voted 2011. I think with this being the first Xmas season at $99, it will stick around for a bit this year and fade in 2010 as the PS3 finally drops to a more earthly price. There's bound to be at least one or two decent games this Q4 (like Persona 4 last year), but I don't think there will be a single decent release in 2010. Even the compilation cash-ins have stopped (will there be an SNK Vol. 2? Probably on Wii/360/PS3, not PS2). It be on shelves through 2010, but after that.....

That's a 10+ year lifecycle at retail. But like the NES and Genesis, people will be playing it for decades because of all the great games.

The PS2 has one of the best libraries on any system ever. And the hits just keep rolling in. Good for companies like Atlus, Konami and Sega for still releasing great games on the PS2 an realizing that people stil enjoy playing there PS2 in the HD age of gaming.

I think it'll stick around for at least another year, maybe two. The quality titles are really starting to dry up right now. I don't think we'll see anything next year other than big multi platform titles and movie cash ins.

I still have a number of friends who want to buy a PS2. Probably not representative of the overall population of the First World, but it must mean something.

What seems weird, though, is that it really doesn't seem that we have already made the transition to a new generation. I don't know if it's because PS2 is still around, but it really just looks as if the new generation of consoles just started, and it's been going for 3 years.

I agree. It's strange. I think its because PS2 remains so cheap, and not just the system but the games. Historically, I have always bought the newest generation of gaming systems at launch. This go around, they just seemed so expensive. That's largely because the PS2 is such a behemoth. I'm still collecting games for it and learning about things I didn't know about. It's hard to get bored with the PS2. And when there are this many great titles on the cheap, it's hard to justify first spending the hundreds of dollars it will cost to get a new system, but also to start buying games in a much higher price bracket. I still don't have a Next Gen system. I did have to buy a nice laptop this year, so I play a lot of the Next Gen games, but I have the most fun running around trying to find more great PS2 games to add to my giant PS2 library.

I wonder why Sony decided to support the PS2 less. Obviously they must have decided for a reason that it would be better to focus on promoting the PS3 & high-definition entertainment.

It's just that you'd think this is a time when companies should be trying to be as resourceful as possible, which is pretty much Nintendo's policy and look at what it's done for them.

On the other hand, I've been really poor for the past two years - straight impoverished. I'm less than the standard consumer. Once I break into my profession as a welder & have some money, I'm heading straight over to get a PS3, a high-def TV, and a copy of BlazBlue. :)

But until then, it has just been a letdown that there hasn't been a lot of good shooters, RPGs, and other small-developer games popping up each month. (Did Raiden IV really need to be for the 360? Guess anyone who has a 360 would say yes, admittedly that game does look LAVISH with high-def and more colorful textures, and I'm just looking at youtube vids of it.)

I think he last good games will appear in 2010 and the last games will be released on 2011.

Also some games are going to be forced to change their current system even if they don't like it like Beatmania.

If they add motion control to the PS2, that will hold the attention of the public for while longer. It worked for Nintendo when added motion control to the Gamecube.
