Actually the newest model of the PSP (3000) is one of the worst put together pieces of hardware I've ever seen.

If you want a good sturdy dependable and all around workhorse then always go for the first model of the PSP (1000) as it is an amazingly durable and versatile piece of hardware compared to it's later revisions.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

the only thing i dislike about the version 1000 is the umd slot. i was soo confused (and still am a bit) about where to put the umd.......although i do agree its probally the best. 2000 was't bad either. but id also say stick with version 1000.

What?

You open the slot on the back via the switch, slide it into the metal slot and close, it's that simple.

The older the better, I imagine it is much cheaper than the 3000 also.

Ouch, yeah windows is the primary front of the emulation scene. You should be able to do alright though since you're looking into retro emulation (can't speak from experience unfortunately).

As for the battery life, if ~5-6 hours isn't enough I highly recommend getting a PSP Grip Charger.
They're really cheap, way more comfortable than just the console itself and nearly double your playtime.
