The Dire Straits video represents the peak of graphics within their limitations when you look at how smoothly the characters are animated along with how well the seem to have been able to synchronize with the music and all the action on the screen.

That having been said, I think that this is the last generation we'll see where the hardcore are still on top (for however much that still matters), after this it's a free for all game for the masses and corporate stockholders that have absolutely no idea how the business is actually supposed to be run sadly.

I think back in the day it was hard for the chip to give much of musical notes so they have to go with something as simple as humming . And they had to make a catchy tune with something that is almost humming, like we can hum any famous game tune, but I do not know any tune for any ps1 and later era.(sorry the N64 OoT had a nice hum to it, but it was cartridge still!)

Later they could add clear sounds of drums and guitars and everything else so I guess they used this to cover up for not putting the effort for a good piece of music.

I came up with this theory, if you want to know if the tune of any song/music is good put it in a mid(hum) form. If you still like it and people like it then its distinguishable and worth it. Otherwise its crap. I like .mid , I wish they still used them when you enter someone's personal website(I am retro-internet).

I hate to burst your bubble but that's how most music producers work. It's called a melody :P. Maybe not a significant part of a song writing process, but one of the things they think about is how "hummable" the melody is, because in most cases, the easier it is to hum, the more likely it's going to stay in the consumers head and more likely they'll like the song and buy it. That's why most hooks in songs aren't more than 3 to 5 notes. It still exists today and doesn't only pertain to retro tunes.

Sigh, sadly the melody and rythim have been on life support for the mainstream with the advent of modern 00's retard gangsta' rap.

That's why it's up to all of us to reject modern music and go see such acts as ZZ Top, Boston, KISS, and Peter Frampton.

Nope, I grew disgusted with modern music midway through college. Before that you still had a lot of good stuff like RHCP, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, and Foo Fighters. It was mostly that Dire Straits popped up on my Winamp, I remembered it had that crazy CG video, and came up with a bullshit post to draw attention to classic rock.

Didn't this start as a discussion of graphics in games?

The best music from the last fifty years came from the 70s and 80s(though some 90s music is good). The only thing now that I really care to listen to is the thrash metal revival that seems to be going on, which is a throwback to 80s thrash metal, so it doesn't really count I suppose.
