I seem to recall Cloverfield being well received when it came out, at least critically and a certain pop culture website I often frequent said it was good too. I enjoyed it. It was definitely different. I seem to find myself liking a lot of J.J. Abrams work. Him, Joss Whedon and Ron Moore are really good about making geeky stuff interesting and fun. Unlike them though, Abrams seems to be enjoying mainstream success.

Getting back to Cloverfield, I actually liked how that one guy actually had the balls to basically walk straight towards certain death to try and save his girl. Maybe it was stupid and idealistic, but hey, it's a movie

I watched a handful of films over the July 4 holiday.

My Name Is Bruce - Absolutely classic Bruce Campbell, well worth watching if you're a fan of his acting. It makes lots of references to his previous acting jobs, ranging from high points like Bubba Hotep and the Evil Dead series, to some of the absolute crap he's appeared in, like his work for the line of SciFi Originals that make me want to stab out my eyes with a spork. If you're not a fan of Campbell, well...it's probably best to avoid it then, as it really is very much about him.

In Bruges - A very dark comedy about two hitmen from the UK sent to hide out in Bruges, Belgium. Really depressing and bleak hilarity ensues. I loved every minute of it.

Eden Log - It's a strange French Science Fiction film where a man wakes up naked and covered in mud at the bottom level of a cave, and must figure out what's going on and who he is while being pursued by animalistic, humanoid monsters and attempting to make his way topside. It's...well, it's pretty slow, very atmospheric, and makes clever use of lighting, but the plot can be difficult to follow up until the very end, and it's not exactly the most action-packed film I've ever watched. Still, some of the shots in Eden Log are quite creepy, making it feel almost like a horror film.

I also rewatched Tropic Thunder. I still find it hilarious.

Cloverfield was an amazing ride in theater for the first viewing. Upon the 2nd viewing at home, it was completely boring.

I'll agree with that, though both viewings elicited the same "Why the hell are you leaving the weapons behind? Are you STUPID?!" remarks from me.

Oh yeah, I also forgot that I watched this last Friday:

Jackie Chan's Miracles. It's a story-driven film about a man who comes to Hong Kong in the 1930s, saves a mob boss from execution, and is accidentally named heir to his criminal empire. It's not nearly as action-packed as some of his other films from the era, but the few scenes that do feature it are nothing short of amazing, especially the ending sequence. If you're interested in seeing some Chinese comedy with just a bit of Chan's usual flair, it's worth checking out.

Wait, when did this finally come out?

I was waiting for the longest time and never heard of it being released.

I saw the only east coast showing of it last October. The dvd was released in February. If you do pick it up, look for the Three Stooges.
