I just got a CDX!

Post by Lokkenjawnz »

As the title suggests, I just got a CDX!! For $40 bucks, with Maximum Carnage, World Of Illusion, and Aladdin, all boxed with manuals. Unfortunately I don't have any Sega CD games yet, but who cares I got a CDX with some great games for $40!

However, this is not just a bragging post, I have in fact a problem: the video on the CDX is a little screwy. Audio comes through perfectly, however to get video out I have to put a bit of pressure on the connector up or down. This says to me that there's just not enough contact between the plug and the jack, but I'm not sure. My question is: is there a way to fix this? It's not that big of a deal really, I can just prop it up on a gamecase to keep pressure on the cable, however I don't like the idea of having it like this for long periods of time. Any help would be awesome.

1) Is it an Official SEGA A/V Cable or RF?
2) Your A/V Multiout may need to be re-soldered to the motherboard.

I believe it's an official Sega cable, it's got gold pins, and is very high quality.

I'm really hoping I don't need to replace the connector, I sure as hell couldn't do it myself, and I'm not sure how readily available the connector is without sacrificing a Genesis. Have you ever heard of/dealt with a problem like this? Is it common? I've only got a model 1 Genesis myself, and that big connector is a beast so I've never had this issue before, except on an old TV.

You wouldn't need to sacrifice a Genesis to get your A/V Multiout fixed, you would only need to reheat the existing broken conact point and stick the circuit back together.

As for the A/V Cable, Official SEGA ones have a round cord, a ferrite bead (big cylinrical shape) next to the end going to the A/V Multiout, and are always Stereo, except for Model 1 (fat A/V Multiout) cables which always Mono as Model 1's only output Mono from their A/V Multiout's.

Alright, I'll look into fixing the connector. Or, more likely, having someone else do it. I'd like to at least take a look at it though, does anyone have a guide to taking the CDX apart? I'm pretty experienced at taking electronics apart and getting them back together again, but are there are bits in the CDX that need a bit of caution?

I wouldn't know where to get a guide, but I say be careful with everything on that motherboard.

The CDX is a pain in the ass to try and take apart. Most consoles have a lot of air inside that make it easier to repair, but the CDX is crammed in there to make everything fit. I wasn't able to get past removing the bottom cover when I was trying to open mine to fix the fact that the disc wouldn't spin up. I eventually just bought a can of compressed air and blew it near the drive motor, which fixed it (giving me a CDX for $10). So good luck with trying to take it apart.
