Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Not dangerous at all but you'll probably need a degaussing method.

"Ta-tay"

Rotate while it's off then turn it on and degauss.

90% of CRT monitors including mine have a degauss button.

I've had my od monitor out of the closet and hooked up to the family comp for about two hours now, but it's taken to degaussing itself randomly every few minutes, anybody know if that's caused from it being in storage for a while or if I need a new monitor.

Also does any company or shop still sell CRT monitors?

Is it said as in ro-tate?

Or tah-tay?
its the japanese pronounciation tah-tay and I believe its named after someone? anyway "a while" is months on end. I have had two dedicated tate crts for over a year with no problems in either case.
Yes, it's "tah-tey".

"Tate" is short for "tateru". The literal translation of "tateru" is to construct or build upwards, and "tate" indicates something that is taller/longer than it is wide (i.e.: a 4:3 horizontal monitor that is rotated to 3:4 in a "vertical" orientation).

As for rotating a monitor: there's no inherent danger of damaging the monitor. Things to be careful of:

1) Rotate only while the monitor is off. This has more to do with degaussing than anything, but is recommended.

2) Watch the natural air convection. Monitors/TVs usually have ventilation holes on the top to allow heat to escape. Make sure if your monitor/TV is rotated that there's enough natural ventilation. You shouldn't need any fan-forced cooling, just make sure it's not inside a wooden TV cabinet or anything. Just sitting on a table should be fine.

3) Make sure it's sturdy. Most TVs obviously aren't designed to sit on their side, so make sure it's not likely to fall over or slide around - particularly if like me you have young kids who CONSTANTLY trip over cables no matter where they are in the room or how obvious they are.

My other main concern is when the right moment to rotate it is. Should I do it when it's on or off and whether I should degauss it before or after I TATE it.
Rotate while off. And you'll have to degauss after rotation. Doing so before hand is pointless, as rotating the CRT changes it's alignment with any local magnetic fields (including the Earth's), which is why you get the problems in the first place.

Thanks for the info.

Still though, does anybody know of a place or company to get new CRT monitors from or am I stuck buying used at some computer shop?

Here in Australia we have plenty of cheap warehouse style shops selling cheap Chinese crap electronics, and all of them are filled to brim with CRT TVs.

Perhaps it's just our close proximity to South East Asia, but I'm surprised the same doesn't happen elsewhere in the Western world.

Well we've got plenty of those cheap chinese sets as well, but I'm trying to find a PC monitor in particular not a TV set.

Oh right. Well in that case, you might need to be checking second hand.

My work is going through a phase of throwing out heaps of old 21" SVGA CRT monitors and upgrading to flat panels across various sections of the business. Whenever they do I usually slap up a note on AussieArcade and the monitors clear out in hours. :)

Cool.

In that case any US Racketboy'ers know if your jobs, any locations etc... that happen to be getting rid of their monitors, in good shape of course.
