Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?
I've really gotten into DC shmups as of late and have my old CRT PC monitor just sitting in the closet, so I decided to take it out and use it for my shmups. Now the biggest concern I have is if it's safe to have a CRT monitor rotated on it's side for extended periods of time.
All I've been able to find is that I should degauss the monitor upon rotating it to compensate for the changes in magnetic direction on the shadow mask, but other than that I can't seem to get any other info on safety etc...
My main concern is that I don't want my monitor to:
A) Catch Fire
B) Short Out
C) Explode
D) Implode
E) Kill Me
F) All Of The Above

It'd be safer just to lean to the side while you play.
Re: Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?
ive had various tated crts for a while now and none of them have blown up. The worst that can happen is you screw up the display by not degaussing it but its otherwise totally safe

Well I've accepted the fact that CRT's are basically a defused vacuum bomb, but I just want to know if tilting it will restart the countdown timer.

How long is 'a while' as I plan on TATE-ing it and leaving it that way for the rest of the foreseeable future.toredauei wrote:ive had various tated crts for a while now and none of them have blown up. Also just curious but how exactly is TATE pronounced?
Is it said as in ro-tate?
Or tah-tay?

Re: Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?
I always go with rotate pronounciation. Honestly I don't think there should be a big problem, aside from the fact that having it on its side is inherently less stable, due to lack of a stand. In terms of ventillation there should be no worries, since they are full of vents anyway.

its the japanese pronounciation tah-tay and I believe its named after someone? anyway "a while" is months on end. I have had two dedicated tate crts for over a year with no problems in either case.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Also just curious but how exactly is TATE pronounced?![]()

Re: Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?
I guess I won't worry then.
My other main concern is when the right moment to rotate it is. Should I do it when it's on or off and whether I should degauss it before or after I TATE it.

Re: Is it dangerous to rotate a CRT monitor?
Cool, although I may have to get a new CRT soon anyway as my old one has taken to making a degauss-like noise randomly every half hour or so.toredauei wrote:its the japanese pronounciation tah-tay and I believe its named after someone? anyway "a while" is months on end. Are there any companies still making CRT monitors?
